The Albayzín

Granada's ancient core.

Located in the upper reaches of old Granada, the Albayzýn was the city's original nucleus, site of the first settlements by the Iron Age tribes known as the Iberians. Its an area best explored on foot, roaming its narrow lanes and emerging onto overlooks early in the morning to watch the city waking up. You can start your explorations in Plaza Nueva, then head along the Carrera del Darro, site of the 16th-century Casa de Ágreda and the Santa Inés Convent. You'll pass over the Cadí Bridge which once linked the Albyzýn with the Alhambra, the Bañuelo Arab baths, and the Casa de Castril palazzo, site of the Provincial Archaeological Museum. At the end of the street is the iconic Paseo de los Tristes (Way of the Sad, so dubbed because many funerals would pass through here) as other landmarks such as the Darahorrao Palace and the Casa de Porras.
