Settlement of Sa Caleta
A Phoenician village dating back as far as the 8th century BC
Ibiza's oldest ancient settlement
Down on the southeast coast, Sa Caleta is known more for its lovely beach, but nearby next to a pier you'll also find an ancient UNESCO World Heritage settlement that isn't Roman but rather Phoenician, and far older, dating back to the 6th-7th century BC. Believed to have been home to up to 500 residents, the village isn't all that big - about six hectares (15 acres) - and there has been considerable erosion, but you can still see the remnants of narrow lanes, dwellings, a defensive bastion, and circular ovens some two metres (6½ feet) in diametre.
