José Saramago House-Museum

The final harbour of Portugal's Nobel Prize-winning novelist

Inland west of Arrecife, another of Lanzarote's most representative house-museums besides César Manrique's is dedicated to the Portuguese Nobel laureate for literature José Saramago (1922-2010), who spent his final years here enjoying the climate and quiet, from which he drew inspiration. His Casa Abierta (Open House) is, said Saramago, "a house made of books", where literature is in the very air and the writer's extraordinary book collection lines the walls from floor to ceiling. His personal effects, photos, manuscripts, writing study, bedroom, living room, and gardens are all now open to lit fans interested in learning more about the author and the man. There's also something of an art collection, including a Manrique engraving and signed drawings by Spain's illustrious 20th-century poet Rafael Alberti.
