Perchiguera Lighthouse
At the south of Lanzarote, another of the island's symbols
An illuminating mid-19th-century landmark
Built in 1856, the Faro de Punta Pechiguera is located in Yaiza, in the island's south, from where on a clear day you can see the neighbouring Canary Island of Fuerteventura. It was part of a mid-19th-century "illumination plan" meant among other things to signpost the Bocaina Strait, and was in operation for more than a century until it was superseded by a more modern lighthouse - automated and four times higher - built right alongside it. The old-time feel of the antique lighthouse is still yours for the appreciating, however - although the interior is closed to visitors due to its dilapidated state.
