Tanit Ethnographic Museum

Canarian culture, traditions, and history

The Canary Islands has a very distinct culture and traditions, and for those interested in learning more, the Museo Etnográfico Tanit in the town of San Bartolomé is a fantastic way to get up to speed on much of it. Occupying the basement of a onetime aristocratic manse (you can still see the original cisterns), its rooms are organised as a progression through time, from the development of the earliest Lanzarote settlements atop wind-whipped volcanic rock. It's the perfect spot to get a comprehensive feel for the island's history as well as culture, as well as early Guanche influence, displaying traditional furniture, tools, clothing, and crafts. The permanent collection is complemented by temporary exhibitions as well as conferences. The museum is open Monday through Saturday 10 am to 2 pm.
