Rivas Museum of History and Anthropology

A visit that's not to be missed

Inaugurated in a historic building in the city of Rivas in 1975, this museum has a main room dedicated to the exhibition of pre-Columbian ceramics, found in the sites that dot Nicaragua's coastal zones. In addition of ceramics, this space brings together the remains of prehistoric animals, as well as varied examples of the country's mineral wealth. In the other rooms, you'll be able to admire paintings that depict the country's most emblematic legends, as well as a display of postage stamps from the city. The headquarters in which the museum is situated has a history of its own: it was the first house in the country to be taken by North American troops, led by William Walker, and, at the end of the 19th century, was used by the editor of the newspaper 'El Termómetro', where Rubén Darío published one of his first poems.
