Museo del Carnaval
The whole city goes wild at Carnival, the largest public party in the city.
Carnival is definitely the most eagerly awaited event of the year for any true local; an event that sees the whole city go all out to offer a huge dose of joy and fun between the end of January and March. Not without reason, it's thought to be the longest-running carnival in the world. The Museo del Carnaval, a museum dedicated to this vibrant tradition, opened in 2006 with the aim of preserving and promoting the traditions behind the Carnival. This dynamic museum takes to the streets to meet people, organises activities and offers guided tours. A representative corner? The Plaza del Carnival, an open-air, public square which hosts temporary exhibitions and even has its own stage that is used for all kinds of shows. The collection here includes a detailed account of the history of the candombe, accompanied by a series of artefacts, photographs and costumes of huge historical value. It is the soul of Montevideo.
