The modernity and bluish hue of this tower stand in sharp contrast to the classicism of this area.
The needle in the haystack.
If one building really stands out in the Plaza Independencia it is, without doubt, the Office of the President of the Republic of Uruguay. The Torre Ejecutiva is a very symbolic building offering a modern touch in an area full of classic buildings, a contrast allegorically watched over by the impassive statue of Artigas. Inaugurated in 2009, this blue-tinted glass tower with its twelve floors soon became one of the most iconic images of Montevideo. The cost of the building, in excess of twenty million dollars, and the building process itself, which spanned a lengthy 46 years during which the works were suspended on various occasions, sparked no shortage of heated debate; however, the end result was certainly worth it. It is divided into two sections covering a total surface area of nearly 30,000 m2 and which are home to offices for public agencies and international organisations. The last three floors are reserved for the President's Office.
