Munich Jewish Museum
A public museum inaugurated in 2006 to documents both the achievements and tribulations of a people with deep local roots
Devastation and survival
With a distinguished history in Munich reaching back to the 5th century, the city's Jews had their shares of ups and downs, including both great achievement and periodic persecution and pogroms, as elsewhere in Europe. But of course the catastrophe that was the Nazi rise to power in the 1930s was uniquely and unimaginably devastating. The Jüdisches Museum München, inaugurated in 2006 in Sankt-Jakobs-Platz between a synagogue and a Jewish community centre, tells the story engagingly and well.
