The People’s Theatre and the Theatre of Paris
These theatres are home to the city’s most exquisite music and dance. The Ópera de la Bastille (or simply opéra Bastille), in the twelfth arrondissement, is known locally as “the people’s theatre”. The architect Carlos Ott design the curved profile of the glass-fronted building, which has a 2,700 person capacity and five technologically advanced, fully mobile stages. It opened in 1989 to commemorate the 200 year anniversary of the fall of the Bastille. You can view its programme of contemporary performances on www.operabastille.net. On the other hand, the Ópera Garnier, also called The Theatre of Paris, is known not only for its world-class performances but also for its impressive architecture. Commissioned by Napoleon III, it was designed by the architect Charles Garnier. Opening in 1875, its neo-baroque style and impressive dimensions make it one of the most eye-catching buildings on the city’s urban skyline. The complex also includes a luxurious restaurant.
