Named after Bohemia's patron St. Wenceslas, the commercial heart of downtown Prague dates back to the founding of the city's "New Town" in 1348 ("new" in relation to Old Town, that is). It's more of a boulevard than a square, some 625 metres (2,050 feet) long and 60 metres (197 feet) wide, leading up to the National Museum and below it, an equestrian statue of St. Wenceslas (a 10th-century Bohemian duke). Lined with various shops, hotels, restaurants, and other businesses, it has also been the site of a number of historic events and in particular mass celebrations, demonstrations, and protests.
