Both rum and beer have a long history in this thirsty tropical country. The Dominican Republic’s most popular and typical beer brands are Presidente (recognisable by its characteristic green colour), Bohemia, and Soberana. Even more associated with the big sugarcane-producing DR is rum – some of the world’s finest are distilled here, with brands such as Brugal, Barceló, Bermúdez, and Matusalem aged in American white oak with an emphasis on smoothness. Interesting, in the Dominican Republic it's customary to offers toasts to departed relatives.
