A breakfast comfort-food classic.
This comfort-food dish of boiled/mashed green plantains mixed with sundry ingredients (varying depending on the region) such as salami, eggs, cheese, avocado, and vinegar-soaked onions, is popular especially for breakfast. The curious name “mangú” has been said to derive from “man, good!” – exclamations heard from U.S. soldiers during the first occupation of the country in the early 20th century. But much more likely is that it’s of African origin, thanks to the slaves brought over generations before that. Certainly “man, good!” describes it to a tee, and this should be on the menu of all visitors to the DR at least once.
