Apoyeque Volcano

Exuberant landscape

The Chiltepe peninsula is a natural attraction that no visiting outdoor enthusiasts can afford to miss. This area, a Nicaraguan nature reserve, offers a breathtaking setting, surrounded by the natural wildlife produced by the volcanic earth. Found about 10 kilometres from Managua, this peninsula is home to two lagoons, at Apoyeque and Xiloá. The Apoyeque lagoon was formed by the eruption of a volcano that bears the same name; it is estimated that this eruption occurred no less than two thousand years ago and, though some studies have labelled it as having among the highest likelihoods of eruption in the world, its activity is limited to occasional fumaroles and the smell of sulphur. Reaching the summit is not easy and requires a local guide, but the experience is one of a kind.
