A downtown square with some of the city's (and country's) most important sites and monuments - and great for a rest and some people-watching, too!
A key nerve centre for the city and country.
Welcome to the historic heart of San Salvador. All you need to do is look around to comprehend the importance of this square; facing north, you have the Metropolitan Cathedral, behind you and presiding over the square, the National Palace. Check out the equestrian statue of General Gerardo Barrios, a martyred mid-19th-century president for whom the plaza is actually officially named (Plaza Cívica is what it's more commonly known as). It has stood here since 1909, witness to historical events such as the military coup against president Manuel Araujo in 1931 and the end of the civil war in 1992. A great spot to get a sense of the city's and country's history.
