Why this became known as the "café of the stars"

Café Oquendo

Belle-Époque elegance

In 1924, Lorenzo Iriondo and Vicenta Arregui had the good luck to open their Café Oquendo halfway between the Kursaal and the Victoria Eugenia Theatre. Why? Because as of 1953 those two spots became key centres for the city's reknowned international film festival. And thus passing movie types came to frequent the place, which became dubbed "the café of the stars" - including the glamorous likes of Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor. Despite a couple of remodelings over the years, you can still enjoy its elegant vintage Belle-Époque ambiance today.
