A magnet for social life, eating, and drinking, day or night
Old Town's key plaza
After a devastating fire in 1813, much of San Sebastián needed rebuilding, and among the new spaces was this square designed by architect Pedro de Ugartemendia, which essentially became its epicentre. For generations since, the expansive, arcade-lined Plaza de la Constitución (named after Spain's constitution of 1812, not its current one) has been fondly known to locals as "La Consti", one of the Old Town's liveliest social scenes, with its bars and cafés seemingly always full. It's also the site of annual events such as the start of the August cultural festival Semana Grande and the close of the January 20 Tamborrada drum festival.
