La Bretxa Market

The other historic public market

The second of San Sebastián's main public markets (the other being Mercado San Martín), the Mercado de la Bretxa is located on the central thoroughfare Boulevard, halfway between the city hall and the Kursaal cultural centre. Its roots at this location go back to 1870, though the current structure designed by architect José de Goicoa dates to 1898. As with the other market, the vicissitudes of history and local politics have taken their toll, and these days the market has been relegated to the basement, with the more accessible floors reserved for more mainstream brands and chains. See you at La Bretxa!
