La Concha Beach
Bayfront centre stage in the panorama of the city's natural and Belle-Époque splendour
The jewel in Donostia's crown
The centrepiece of the tableau that makes San Sebastián such an amazing city, the more than one kilometre (half mile) of fine white sand is front and centre on La Concha Bay, flanked on one side by Santa Clara Island, the Club Náutico, and the Alderdi Eder Gardens/City Hall, and on the other by Miramar Palace and Mt. Igueldo. The nearly enclosed bay makes La Concha Beach's waters exceptionally calm and safe for swimming (though on the downside, the tides can sometimes come in in a major way, barely leaving room for beachgoers). This is the jewel in the crown that led King Alfonso XIII back in the early decades of the 20th century to dote on this city as a summer retreat (he even had a bath house on rails built to bring him right up to the water). The beach is also the site of various concerts, festivals, and events throughout the warm-weather months.
