Belle-Époque splendour that jump started San Sebastián as a holiday destination

Miramar Palace

Fit for a queen

San Sebastián rose to major prominence as a holiday destination when in 1887 Queen María Cristina started summering here. It was in the years following that many lovely Belle-Époque buildings were built, including this, the queen's spectacular palace on La Concha Bay across from Santa Clara Island. Designed by Seldon Wornum in "English cottage" style (he built palaces in a similar vein in the French Basque resorts cities of Biarritz and St. Jean de Luz), its gardens are also an eyeful.
