Pukas and Basque Surfing
An iconic surf shop, surfboard maker, surfing school, and more
An institution in Spain's surf capital
The Basque Country is perhaps Spain's premier surfing mecca, and the San Sebastián area has become a must destination on its circuit, from the central La Concha Bay beach itself to La Zurriola to outlying towns and beaches such as Zarautz, which hosts major international surf competitions. The sport has been big locally since the 1970s, and internationally acclaimed surfboard maker Pukas was founded here in 1979 by Íñigo Letamendia, Marian Azpiroz and Miguel Azpiroz. Beyond making boards and selling them at its shop at Mayor Kalea 5, though, Pukas has evolved into a surf school; organiser and sponsor of competitions throughout Spain; and ambassador of the sport as well as Basque sport in general throughout the world.
