Tamborrada Drum Festival

Bang the drum loudly

A one-day drumming festival - inspired by historical military sieges of the 18th/19th centuries and documented as far back as 1836 - have been held for some years now every January 20. In the Tamborrada 100 companies of 20 to 50 drummers each parade through the downtown streets from the night of the 19th, then make their way through various parts of the city to the marching music of local composer Raimundo Sarriegui (especially his San Sebastián March); there's a version for kids, too. It all winds up in the Plaza de la Constitución, and also involves feasting at the city's famous dining societies.
