Another world, just 10 km outside San Sebastián
Traditional Basque bastion
The Basque Country's complicated topography of rugged coast and mountainous hinterland has historically yielded many rural villages without all that much communication with the outside world. As a result, here many traditional Basque customs and traditions have survived and thrived more intact well into our own times. The village of Hernani is a perfect example, though it's just 10 kiliometres (seven miles) outside San Sebastián, and as such makes a fascinating day trip. Despite this isolation, however, during key conflicts such as the 19th-century Carlist Wars and the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, the village was a strategic point which experienced significant fighting - the scars of which can still be discerned in the town hall and surrounding areas.
