On the Spanish-French border, with a lovely medieval quarter

Village of Hondarribia

Small town, big history

Highly influential in the history of the Basque Country especially considering its small size, Hondarribia is located on the border between France and Spain, and over the centuries has been the site of numerous battles and skirmishes over territory, starting in the Middle Ages between rival kingdoms. In fact, a particularly momentous battle of 1638, Sagunto and Numancia, is still commemorated here every year as a great local triumph; you can still see the scars left by that fighting in the walls and fortifications built during the reign of Charles V. Other atmospheric musts include the medieval quarter's bell tower, Arma Plaza, and main drag, the Calle Mayor.
