San Blas Parish Church in Villa de Mazo
15th- and 16th-century masterworks in the town of La Maza, a short drive south of the capital
One of La Palma's top historic landmarks outside Santa Cruz
Apart from the landmarks of the city of Santa Cruz proper, probably the most important on the island of La Palma is this early-15th-century church dedicated to St. Blaise, in the town of Villa de Mazo, 13 kilometres (eight miles) south of the capital. Starting as a small hermitage with Mudéjar-style walls, two centuries later a pair of naves was added, and today the highlights of the San Blas Church include various enormously valuable retables, the most notable of which is a Baroque masterpiece carved in mahogany. Also of interest is the rectory alongside, housing various artworks and objets (especially from Flanders) including wood panels, goldwork, and a pair of 16th-century paintings of St. Anthony "the Great" and Dominican order founder St. Dominic.
