Our Lady Queen of Angels Church

Reminders of Spanish origins.

The Pueblo de Los Angeles, founded by Spanish colonisers in 1781, has a place in the centre of Los Angeles consisting of half a dozen streets where the oldest buildings in the city can be found. The best known of these is the Our Lady Queen of Angels Church, erected in what is known as the Plaza Vieja between 1818 and 1822. Going inside is like being transported to a Mexican temple. This sensation is enhanced when you hear the congregation speak; most of them are Spanish speakers (the church is one of the few places used for Catholic services). The Franciscan Friar Luis Gil y Taboada was the one who laid down the first stone of the building. The same building had to be remodelled in 1861, though the original materials were used to preserve its appearance. A century later, in 1962, the church was declared a historical and cultural monument of Los Angeles. Currently, a group of teachers who call themselves Las Angelitas (www.lasangelitas.org) offer free guided tours which last around 50 minutes, from Tuesday to Saturday. If you want more information on this historical building you can visit www.reinadelosangeles.org.
