Antigua Guatemala
If the walls of Antigua could talk, they'd have a lot of tales to tell.
The colonial city par excellence.
Antigua Guatemala is said to be a city that looks to the past, preserving its Mayan and colonial legacy passed down from its golden age, many years ago. Today, its cobbled streets are a good reminder that it was once the capital of the country, until the terrible earthquakes of 1773 shook this honour from its hands. However, you can still visit the famous Cerro de la Cruz hill, the former Spanish Embassy and one of the best-preserved colonial buildings in the entire country, a perfect example of the architecture of this place. What else can you find here? The Santa Catalina Arch, the Central Park, the Church and Convent of Our Lady of Mercy and an endless array of hidden historical corners that never fail to surprise and delight: especially if you visit during Easter. The history of Guatemala is written on the walls and streets of this city.
Punta de Manabique
Peaceful and secluded enclave with impressive sunsets.
Coastal paradise in the north.
A beautiful tip of the country, a peninsula that forms the border with Honduras in the middle of the Caribbean coast. This unique area is an authentic coastal paradise that has been made into a nature reserve. Thanks to the peacefulness of Punta de Manabique, the fauna and flora is still basically wild, especially the marine life. In fact, among the coconut trees and palm trees, you'll see tortoise, tapir and jaguar, although these large cats are very elusive. One of the best ways to explore the area is to head to the port and take a motorboat along the coast to look for marine animals and plants. The crystalline water offers great visibility and, if you have the chance, head out towards the end of the day as the sunsets are among the best you'll ever see. The area is also full of mangrove forests.
Pacaya Volcano
Ever seen an active volcano? There's a first time for everything.
Active nearly every day.
Pacaya Volcano is over 2,500 metres above sea level, but this isn't its most distinguishing feature: the unusual thing about it, which makes for an unbeatable visit, is that this is an active volcano that you can still climb to the top of. Pacaya shows constant signs of activity, nearly every day, which can be seen with the naked eye; in fact, you'll get so close to the remains of lava flows that you can almost touch them. Obviously, the volcano is closed during especially active periods, more or less once a year. The climb to the summit, passing by walls of solid lava, won't take more than two hours and you can even take the whole family with the help of a specialist guide. Its appeal is not just about what's bubbling away below: the views from the top are truly spectacular, especially at sunset.
Ipala Volcano
The top of this volcano has some of the best panoramic views in Guatemala.
A crater over one kilometre wide!
This is one of the most impressive geological features in the entire country, located in the southern department of Chiquimula. Ipala is no ordinary volcano: it is in fact a stratovolcano, formed from layer upon layer of solidified lava and rock. It is over 1,500 metres tall, but the most impressive thing about it is the size of its crater: one kilometre wide! Amazing, right? You can usually get to the top on foot; that is, if you're not on one of the especially difficult routes. At the end of the climb, you'll be rewarded by beautiful views of the entire region and the neighbouring Suchitán Volcano, which is also very popular. You can either tackle the climb on foot or hire a horse to help with the ascent. We recommend bringing some warm clothing to protect against the low temperatures at the summit.
Biotopo del Quetzal Nature Reserve
Lush and mysterious natural magic that embraces your senses.
Breath in the fresh air.
At the heart of the country, around 140 kilometres (87 miles) from the capital, this nature reserve is a magical park in the middle of the jungle. You'll find it hard to miss: an area hidden under a thick canopy of vegetation which seems impenetrable in places and lends a mysterious and isolated feel to the park. The Biotopo del Quetzal nature reserve is one of the green lungs of the country, with over one thousand hectares of land brimming with natural resources. Inside the park, there are multiple walking trails on which to explore Guatemala's rich variety of fauna and flora, starting with the popular orchid park, which is the first thing you'll see on any visit to the park. You can also book onto guided excursions to learn even more about the reserve. If we had to sum up this natural enclave in one word, 'magical' would be the most fitting. You'll love it!
Xela, a capital city at lofty heights
At 2,300 metres above sea level, this is the centre of many tourist attractions.
Fun until dawn.
Xela is the capital of Queltzatenango, the second most important city in Guatemala and the highest in the country by a considerable margin: at around 2,300 metres above sea level. Due to its location, it has a very distinctive climate and identity compared to the rest of the country. Xela is a really thriving city with amazing nightlife to please any visitor: a modern hotel area, huge range of terraces and restaurants, and clubs that stay open until the early hours. All this has made it one of the most visited tourist destination in its own right. In addition, it is also very close to the Fuentes Georginas hot springs, Lake Chicabal and, of course, the famous Lake Atitlán.
Livingston, the pearl of the Caribbean
Port and village in one, a Caribbean town that will soon win you over.
Idyllic beaches and nature.
Livingston is where the Dulce River meets the sea and it was also home to a large Mayan settlement, on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Guatemala, thanks to its outstanding natural beauty and the diverse attractions on offer: stunning beaches with white sands and crystal-clear water, captivating horizons, idyllic palm trees, diverse ecosystems on both sides of the Dulce River and winding trails inviting you to enjoy its natural charms from a different perspective. The food here is also fantastic. What's more, Livingston is halfway between Belize and Honduras, very close to both, making it an ideal base for excursions to either country.
Lake Atitlán
Welcome to the most beautiful lake in the world, surrounded by enormous volcanoes.
Nature in its purest form.
It's no coincidence that this is known as a natural wonder and the most beautiful lake in the world. Lake Atitlán was formed by a volcano and is in fact surrounded by the enormous San Pedro, Atitlán and Tolimán volcanos, painting a stunning, almost indescribable picture. Extending nearly 130 km², the inviting and crystal-clear water is nearly 350 metres deep. The best bit? You'll find a completely different lake depending on when you visit as the light, the clouds and the reflections on the water are constantly changing, offering an endless array of landscapes. Don't forget to visit the villages dotted around the lake, where the inhabitants still live by the spirit of the indigenous culture: wisdom, hospitality and a warm welcome to all visitors.
Semuc Champey
Ever picture yourself swimming in a lagoon in a secluded, natural paradise? Here you can!
Fun and spectacular wild area.
Jungle greenery, wild nature, pretty lagoons. Doesn't it sound great? Semuc Champey is one of Guatemala's most impressive and characteristic ecosystems and, as a result, one of the most visited. You can either take a guided tour or go it alone; however, the area so large that having an expert guide who knows the terrain is probably a good idea. We would definitely recommend this option. That way, you'll get to see the sinkhole, a geological fault caused by the sinking of the Cahabón River, which disappears under the ground to reappear in various small pools around the area. What's more, most of these pools are suitable for swimming in, which is especially appealing when the temperatures are soaring and the sun is taking its toll. The heart of the country.
Tikal National Park
You can't leave Guatemala without visiting this place, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The greatest testament to the Mayan civilisation.
This is the most important archaeological site in the country and it's bound to leave you lost for words. Unsurprisingly, this great testament to Mayan culture became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. It is located in the north of Guatemala, in the middle of the jungle surrounded by thick vegetation and its name means 'the place of voices'. It was inhabited from the 4th century BC to the 10th century AD. You'll find no shortage of spectacular buildings here, such as the Temple of the Masks or the Temple of the Double-headed Snake; however, the most impressive of them all is undoubtedly the Temple of the Great Jaguar, a funerary pyramid nearly fifty metres tall. The huge staircase leading up to the skies offers a first-hand experience of the grandeur of this historic civilisation. Other unmissable places include the North Acropolis, Central Acropolis and the Silvanus G. Morley Museum. An absolute must!
Sololá, natural horizon
The locals still keep indigenous traditions alive in everyday life.
The gateway to Lake Atitlán.
The region of Sololá lies in the south west of the country, close to the border with Mexico but still within the general inland area. It is known as the gateway to Lake Atitlán, as it is the most commonly travelled route to the great lake. There are other routes, but this one offers some of the best panoramic views of the area. In Sololá, the locals have kept ancient traditions alive in their daily lives: you'll see people in traditional indigenous dress, with clothing from the Queché and Kaqchikel cultures, two civilisations that shared these lands until well into the 15th century. A recommendation? Visit the villages around the lake, such as Panajachel, Santiago Atitlán and San Antonio Palopó, where the magical landscape blends seamlessly with the deep-rooted, age-old traditions.

In the northern part of the country, this gigantic Biosphere Reserve is home to one of the most important territories in Guatemala. And it is something that we ensure for two very different reasons: on the one hand, thanks to its incredible nature, which makes its flora, its fauna and the mineral world that it houses unique in the world; on the other, due to its enormous archaeological wealth, becoming a great historical window to contemplate the ins and outs of the great Mayan civilization. In fact, Petén is home to the Tikal National Park, the most important in the country, as well as ancestral cities such as Piedras Negras, on the border with Mexico. And if you want to go back even further in time, here you will also find the Actún Can caves, a sacred place for indigenous cultures. All of them, as you can see, archaeological corners that have marked history.

The department of Sacatepéquez, at the centre of the country, has such a diverse capital that its eclecticism has made it one of the most visited regions across Central America. However, the appeal of this region isn't limited to Antigua Guatemala, the large colonial and post-colonial capital; it also extends to the surrounding area, which is home to numerous sites of natural beauty that are of incalculable value to scientists and tourists alike. For example, the forests in the south are home to a range of ecosystems that have helped to understand and explain the different climates in Guatemala. As a result, they are still the subject of all kinds of research projects. Are you one of those adventurous souls who love to ride the waves? Then listen up: Sipicate beach, on the Pacific coast in the south of the country, is an ideal location for surfers, a huge beach that is one of the best surf spots in Central America. At around 140 kilometres (87 miles) from the capital, it is well connected by coach with all the main Guatemalan cities. The charm of this beach lies in its location, with not even a village nearby, giving you total freedom to just be yourself. If you come by car, you'll have to park in the surrounding area, walk a short while and then take a boat until you see mile after mile of white sands and crystalline waters stretching out before you. The immense ocean will welcome you with open arms!
La Aurora National Zoo
With areas organised into different continents, you'll meet all kinds of animals.
An educational, family day out.
As well as being an enormous park, the La Aurora Zoo is a great option in the capital for a fun and educational day out with the family. It is the perfect place to get in touch with Nature, either strolling through the beautiful flora or discovering its many animals. The centre is divided into three areas according to species and habitats: the African region, with lions, zebras and hippopotamuses; the Asia region, with elephants and a spectacular Bengal tiger; and the American region, perhaps the largest, with toucans, crocodiles and turtles. In addition, it also has a herpetarium for snakes and a nocturnal house for animals that come out at night. It is very near to the airport and also has a play area for small children and dining areas to take a break and recharge in beautiful natural surroundings.

Green heart of Guatemala.
In the central department of Alta Verapaz, there is a city called Cobán and at the heart of this city, you'll find the Las Victorias National Park. This protected area covers over eighty hectares and is a very privileged place of unrivalled natural beauty; unsurprisingly, it is ideal for trekking, mountain trails and other adventure sports. It is home to a small lake known as La Laguneta, which has a rich ecosystem full of prawns and different species of fish, tortoise, lizards and other exotic reptiles. Towards the end of the route around the park, you'll find the church of El Calvario and the Ermita de Santo Domingo chapel, offering some truly spectacular views. Surrounded by this stunning landscape, you'll soon understand why this area is called the green heart of Guatemala.
Plaza de Armas, Guatemala City
Surrounded by historic buildings, this is the epicentre of public life in the capital.
The largest public square in the country.
15 September 1821 is a key date in the history of Guatemala: the Act of Independence of Central America was signed that day, under which Guatemala gained independence from Spain, and the official act took place in the Plaza de Armas. Over time, this square has also come to be known as Plaza de la Constitución or Constitution Square. This enormous space is the largest public square in the country and it's surrounded by some of the most important buildings in the capital: to the north by the National Palace; to the south by the Portal del Comercio; to the east by the Metropolitan Cathedral; and to the west by the National Library. It goes without saying that it is the nerve centre of public life in Guatemala and one of the top places to visit in the capital. What's more, it is the ideal starting point for a sightseeing trip around the city.
Takalik Abaj
An amazing site, perfect for soaking up the Mayan and Olmec cultures.
Flying the flag for archaeology.
This is one of the most important archaeological sites in Guatemala, located in the south of the country. In terms of buildings, it is the best surviving example of Mayan and pre-Hispanic civilisation in Guatemala, hence its significance. The site is home to buildings from the 9th and 10th centuries, in addition to monuments of other civilisations and styles, such as the Olmec. In fact, it is the ideal place to explore this culture, which played such a fundamental role in indigenous history during the Pre-classic Mesoamerican period in the area closest to Mexico. This site is home to over eighty ancient buildings and numerous plazas, in addition to multiple stone effigies, some of which are of a considerable size. If you're a fan of ancient civilizations, a visit to Takalik Abaj is a must.

Guatemala's Eifel Tower
It really does look like the Eifel Tower in Paris does it? Albeit a little smaller, it is still just as striking as the French equivalent; unsurprising really as they were built using the same materials and techniques. It is a true symbol of the Guatemalan capital. This metal tower is just over seventy metres high and it can be found in Zone 9 of the city. It was initially called the Torre Conmemorativa del 19 de julio to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Justo Rufino Barrios. This president governed the country from 1873 to 1885 and issued the most important reforms in Guatemala, which are still remembered today. Although the Torre del Reformador was built in the US, the final assembly was left to the mayor of the city at the time, Arturo Bickford. Not to be missed!
Fuentes Georginas Hot Springs
Named after Georgina, the wife of President Jorge Ubico.

The department of Quetzaltenango is highly significant in Guatemala for various reasons. On the one hand, it is the region with the highest percentage of indigenous people, taking great pride in its role as the guardian of this ancestral heritage, and it is the perfect place to explore these pre-Hispanic cultures. On the other hand, it is famous for the popular Fuentes Georginas; a natural spa that emerged with the discovery of the hot springs in the previous century. It is named after Georgina, the wife of Jorge Ubico, one of the country's most popular presidents. The First Lady would come here on a regular basis to treat her muscle problems by bathing in these natural pools and, since then, the springs have seen a well-deserved surge in popularity. It is said that the water cures all types of ailments, leading dozens of people to flock to these springs every day.

Plaza Fontabella is one of the most modern shopping centres in Guatemala. It is a large complex of shops, restaurants and all kinds of establishments dedicated to the world of shopping and leisure, and it's been totally designed for tourists. Its location at the heart of the Zona Viva, in the middle of the capital, speaks volumes. Its philosophy is certainly eclectic: inside, you'll find anything from traditional artisan stalls to shops full of delicatessen products to delight even the most demanding palates, which make for great souvenirs. There's no haggling here, but it is a perfect option if you don't have much time and need to find gifts without traipsing around the whole city. You'll love it.

If you're looking for a modern take on shopping, you've come to the right place. Plaza The Village is a small shopping village located in the heart of the Zona Viva, just a few metres from some of the most iconic places in the capital. It has a good range of shops with all the latest fashions and other more sophisticated offerings such as interior design shops and even a barbershop for those who dare. However, it is mainly geared towards gastronomy, offering a broad range of culinary delights. From cafes to fast-food, Asian, fusion and gourmet restaurants; whichever you choose, you'll be more than satisfied. At night, The Village also has a really vibrant and lively atmosphere.

We would recommend the typical clothing on offer at the markets in any city; these clothes are really vibrant and very high quality as they are handmade using traditional artisan methods. For example, you might choose a pretty güipil, a scarf or the timeless poncho, being one of the country's most popular garments during the winter months. Kitchen utensils are another common souvenir so you can recreate some of the dishes you've tried in the country and, of course, Guatemala's traditional gastronomical products are another great option. If you've been in Guatemala City for a few days, you'll have noticed that there are two very different types of shops in the capital: on the one hand, the modern shops in the Zona Viva; on the other, the more authentic, traditional ones dotted around the city or at the city's popular markets. If you prefer this second type, the Central Market is a must during your visit: located in the historical centre, this peculiar place has a park in the basement that offers a truly unique shopping experience. Go and take a look for yourself, it's not to be missed. It is here where the stalls really pile up, where the traders shout loudest to be heard and where the colours of the fabrics and clothing really stand out. There are certain items, like the craftwork and souvenirs, which you won't find anywhere else.
The Zona Viva
Day or night, the options for leisure and entertainment are endless.
Home of fashion in the capital.
For years now, the Zona Viva has been steadily earning the fame and popularity it currently enjoys, boasting some of the best nightlife in the city. It is also known as Zona 10, as it is located in Metropolitan Zone 10 of Guatemala City. This is a modern area with avant-garde, innovative buildings full of shops, art exhibitions, bars and restaurants, including plenty of terraces which turn into clubs at night, filling the streets with a really lively atmosphere. Many of the bars and clubs stay open until the early hours and the area prides itself on variety, with so many options that you'll be sure to find something to suit your taste. During the day, the Zona Viva is also full of life thanks to its museums and art galleries, with exhibitions by local and international artists.
Antigua Craft Market
Fancy yourself as a good haggler... head straight for the end stalls!
¿Ready to barter?
This market opened a few years ago as way to bring together, promote and publicise products made by the Mayan artisans who live around Antigua, using some very remarkable techniques. It is located just a few metres from the Central Market of the city. Under a rather curious roof, there are a good number of stalls divided into two very different areas. The first, which is more organised and formal, has precious metals, wooden craftwork, fabrics and all types of typical products from Guatemalan cultures, especially the pre-Hispanic. However, the stalls at the end of the market are said to be where you can really haggle on prices and strike a good deal with the traders. Time to show off your best negotiating skills.
Paseo Cayalá
Famous for its fashionable shops, it also offers countless options for dining out.
A city within a city.
Quite different to the traditional, everyday markets, the Paseo Cayalá is located in the centre of the capital and offers an alternative shopping experience. Covering a total of 63 blocks, this area has been built as a miniature city with houses, apartments, hotels, shopping areas and a huge choice of cafes, bars and restaurants. It feels like a city within a city. The range of shops is among the best in the country and you'll be sure to find all the latest fashions, national and international brands, accessories and sportswear; there is also a number of second-hand shops and outlet stores. This is a pleasant, peaceful place to explore at your leisure, to enjoy a quiet, relaxing stroll around the shops. It is also a good option for an evening meal or an afternoon snack.
Chichicastenango Market
Stall upon stall squeezed into a labyrinth of very vibrant and bustling streets.
Thursdays and Sundays are for shopping.
In front of the church and starting on the front steps; the Chichicastenango Market is held in this pretty area on Thursdays and Sundays, when the streets quickly fill up with stalls, colour and people from very early in the morning. This market is one of the most interesting places to browse and buy Guatemala's ever-popular artisan products, famous for their bright, striking colours: you'll find rugs, fabrics, flags, jumpers and a wide selection of textiles at a very good price. Haggling is the order of the day here, so be prepared to negotiate the final price at each stall. A recommendation? It's best to go early, as by mid-morning there is little room to move in this labyrinth of small streets made even smaller by the multiple stalls.
Casa Chapina
True Guatemalan food at its best. A must!
Authentic Guatemalan cuisine.
Step inside Casa Chapina and you'll be at one of the institutions of traditional Guatemalan cuisine, also known as chapina, hence the name of this restaurant. It is located in the heart of the Zona Viva of the capital and its mission is simple: to offer diners the most indigenous menu possible. Here, you'll have the chance to try tamales, the typical guacamole and bean toasts, the excellent beef hilachas, chicharrones, jocón and a practically endless list of all the best national dishes. This philosophy also applies to the desserts and drinks, setting a truly authentic scene. One of the most entertaining aspects are the corn tortillas made to order in full view of the diners; a perfect reflection of the traditional spirit and values of the restaurant. It also has a vegetarian menu. Buen provecho!
The Country Chicken
You will lick your fingers with this really tasty fried chicken.
A great success since the 70s.
There are few places in Guatemala as famous as this chain of restaurants in which chicken stands out as the absolute protagonist, the exceptional guest. The first location of El Pollo Campero opened its doors in 1971 by the businessman Dionisio Gutiérrez, and, since then, the success has been such that it has not stopped expanding both in Guatemala and in other countries. First they landed in Mexico, El Salvador and the United States, but gradually they have even reached different cities in Europe and Asia. Its secret and the basis of its popularity lies in its peculiar way of preparing fried chicken, resulting in a crunchy, well-seasoned and very tasty piece. Its menu consists of wings, crispy thighs, grilled pieces, salads, hamburgers and also breakfast.

Time for a toast!
As a digestif for afters or an aperitif before you eat, Guatemala has a diverse range of traditional alcoholic drinks with very unique flavours that are well worth a try. The most unusual is perhaps cusha, which is made from fermented fruits and is usually prepared during the month of May in honour of the Virgen de los Morenos. However, you'll be able to find its intense flavour at other times of the year. This fruit-based drink is made from aguardiente and local cherries, and chicha, which is the least alcoholic, is made from fermented corn, although it can also be made with fruits. In turn, Zacapa rum was created in 1976 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the village of Zacapa and it's been one of the country's most popular spirits ever since. It is also exported internationally.
Tamales: a flavour sensation
The variety of shapes and flavours is endless. Which will you choose?
Without these, nothing would be the same.
Tamales are the basis of pre-Hispanic gastronomy, a very widespread dish eaten across the vast majority of Latin American countries and, of course, also in Guatemala, where it has a very privileged place in the national cuisine. A tamal is a corn-based dough that can be filled with all kinds of ingredients, both sweet and savoury, which is then wrapped in a corn or plantain leaf and steamed. The type of tamal varies according to the filling; sauces, chilies, chicken, fruit... the possibilities are endless. In Guatemala, they are so common that you'll be able to find them and try them all over the country, especially at street stalls for breakfast. They are sensational, as you'll soon know. A typical Guatemalan variety is the chuchitos, which are filled with pork lard, tomato sauce and chunks of meat.

Legacy of the Xinca civilisation.
The Xincas were a civilisation that lived in the area around the present-day border between Guatemala and El Salvador. Although it has all but disappeared, in its day this civilisation built up a small empire with considerable influence across Central America and was very active against the European invaders. One of the gastronomic legacies of this civilisation which has been handed down to present day is the caldo de chipilín: a broth made by infusing the chipilín plant with the loroco flower. It is very popular in the south west of the country and is truly delicious. Other common Xinca recipes include tamales, drinks such as atole (made from boiled corn) and a dish of pork and rice that was typically served at burials in honour of the deceased person.

Livingston is one of the most beautiful places in the entire country, located on the shores of the Caribbean and famous for its idyllic beaches surrounded by stunning mountains. It is also famous for both its history and gastronomy, being the best place to sample Garifuna cuisine, with its exquisite Afro-Caribbean roots. This style of food mixes seafood with other typical products from the region, such as yucca or plantain. The star dish is, without question, the tapado: an excellent seafood soup made from coconut milk, plantains, single cream and vegetables. Although you've probably never had this combination of flavours before, you'll want a second helping as soon as you try it. A personal recommendation? Make sure you try the typical breakfast of potatoes with chilli and onion or fried golden plantain on the beach front; it will be an unforgettable experience.

This is one of the country's leading markets and it's over one hundred years old: it opened in 1871 in response to the capital's growing population and need for supplies. Located in the former Plaza del Sagrario, just next to the cathedral, it has become one of the busiest shopping spots in the city; a bustling hive of activity any day of the week. Today, it also caters for tourists and, in addition to everyday items like fruit and vegetables, you'll also find souvenirs and pretty artisan products to take home as a reminder of your trip. This is also one of the best places to sample authentic Guatemalan food, with countless stalls offering a huge variety of typical dishes at very accessible prices.

Cakes and desserts are one of the most famous facets of Guatemalan cuisine, boasting both outstanding quality and excellent flavour. Although coffee is not originally a Guatemalan product, this hasn't stopped it becoming one of the country's flagship crops. There are lots of theories as to when it was brought into the country: some say it was during the reign of Carlos III; others suggest a later date, towards the end of the 18th century. In any case, thanks to the extraordinary climate all year round in Guatemala, its coffee has received numerous accolades and has been named the best coffee in the world by no small number of institutions. What's more, the different microclimates in Guatemala mean that different types of beans can be grown here, each more flavoursome than the last: from hard and semi-hard to prime or extra-prime. Coffee is the main economic driver and heart of the country, especially in rural areas, making Guatemala the largest exporter of coffee in Central America.

This museum of music opened its doors in 1987 with a very clear mission: to research, preserve and promote the traditional sounds of the Mayan people who lived in Guatemala. A major undertaking, charged with national pride. Perhaps the most eye-catching of all the exhibitions at Casa K'ojom is the collection of traditional Mayan instruments, complete with an excellent range of documentation that reflects the centre's huge ethnographical value. You'll also find folkloric clothing and all types of artefacts linked to Mayan music, as well as an interesting collection of paintings by the Tz'utujil artist Miguel Chávez Petzey, one of the greatest exponents of indigenous art and culture.
Regional Museum of Archaeological of the Democracy
Its monoliths in the form of human bodies and heads are spectacular.
Unique mix of civilisations.
The uniqueness of this centre stems from its broad collection of monoliths from the pre-Hispanic era that are made from volcanic rock; but these are no normal sculptures, they are carved in human form representing bodies, heads and even pregnant women. The Archaeological Park of the Democracy also traces the development of devices for grinding corn, the foodstuff par excellence of the region, from the very first offerings to other more modern devices that were gradually improved over time. Another part that you won't want to miss is the frescoes and paintings. This artwork showcases the unique artistic trends in this area on the Mexican border, drawing on strange but exquisitely beautiful forms and colours that never fail to impress.
Visitor Center and Site Museum of Quirigua, Izabal

Very close to the border with Honduras and about two hundred kilometers from the capital is the Izabal region, which is home to the Quirigua Visitor Center and Site Museum. The center was inaugurated in 2003 as a measure of the Guatemalan government after the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch five years earlier, with the aim of reactivating the area. This museum keeps an interesting history of the pre-Columbian origins of the country, since it was on the banks of the Motagua River where the Mayan civilization was able to take control of the trade route that linked the Altiplano with the Atlantic shore, thanks to its geographical and orographic situation. , which made them a very powerful people until the Spanish arrival. The Mayans lived in this region until approximately the year 900 AD and left a great legacy that has served to extend their history to the present day.

The Tikal National Park is not only one of the most spectacular places in Guatemala; it is also a key site of the Mayan civilisation. The heart of its culture. Inside the park, you'll find the Visitors' Centre and the Lítica Museum, opened to the public in 1989 and a real must for all visitors to the park: it is home to 26 invaluable, stone-carved steles representing various historical events and the different dynasties that ruled here from the Early Classic to the Late Classic period. Regional Museum of Chichicastenango

A most curious connection.
This museum is testament to a curious, historical bond that has existed for years: the bond between Guatemala and Germany. Located in the Quiché Department, this centre was opened to the public in 1950. Its collection, ranging from the Pre-classic to the Post-classic era, has been donated by Germany thanks to Idelfonso Rossbach, a resident of the parish of Chichicastenango. Rossbach, who was the priest of this parish, took on the task of compiling these invaluable objects from the Guatemalan highlands. The exhibitions here include all kinds of artwork that has been carved, sculpted and worked in precious metals and other materials, such as clay or jade. There is also a collection of colonial weapons that were used in defence against the colonisers and traditional clothing and regalia from these communities.
Railway Museum of Guatemala
Worthy homage to the importance of railways in the development of the country.

Historically, railways have been the main mode of transport for passengers and all types of goods, the backbone of the industrial development of the country. As a unique form of homage, the Guatemalan Association of Friends of the Railways opened this centre to the public in 2004. The Railway Museum of Guatemala displays pieces of trains from different eras, in addition to objects related to daily life and work in this sector: clothing, station furnishings, rolling stock, a large collection of photographs and much more. One of its biggest attractions is the executive carriages owned by the International Railways of Central America, which were used for the presidents of the country and other VIP passengers.

Although the arrival of the Europeans in Guatemala caused part of the country's native culture to be lost, traces of the Mayan civilisation have been recovered over the years through various cultural centres. One of these is the Miraflores Museum which is dedicated to Kaminaljuyu, one of the most important Mayan cities. Hugely important archaeological finds have been discovered at this site, some of which are up to 3,000 years old: sculptures, ceramics, hydraulic engineering works, regalia and typical clothing are just some of the historical treasures on display at this museum. Interestingly, it also has a space dedicated to new forms of artistic expression in Guatemala, with craftwork, paintings and contemporary sculptures. No less special are the views of the Sierra Madre volcanoes which can be enjoyed from this centre.
'Carlos Mérida' National Museum of Modern Art

Although Carlos Mérida, after whom the museum is named, mainly worked in Mexico, he is seen as one of Guatemala's greatest artists and is a source of huge national pride in his native country. The 'Carlos Mérida' National Museum of Modern Art first opened in 1796 as a government initiative, but it wasn't until 1931 that it took on its current form. Its aim is simple: to safeguard, promote and present the type of modern art that is most characteristic of the Guatemalan people, a true cultural symbol of the state. This is a relatively unique aim as most of the country's cultural centres focus on the arduous task of keeping the Mayan heritage alive. The permanent collection at this museum covers drawings, etchings and paintings by the most significant native artists; including, of course, art by Carlos Mérida himself, with an entire room dedicated to his work.

The Popul Vuh Museum has a lot to say on this topic: it is one of the guardians of the memory and artistic heritage of this pre-Colombian culture. Located on the city's university campus, it has numerous collections of all types of art, from ceramics and etchings to metal and wooden utensils that depict daily life in Mayan society. Hipódromo del Sur
One of the city's largest sporting venues used today for cultural events.
1,600 metres long!
Opened in 1923 by the general José María Orellana, the Hipódromo del Sur or southern hippodrome was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of national independence. It was incorporated into the enormous Aurora estate, together with the airport, which at the time was a gigantic park and popular promenade. An extremely popular venue, it underwent various renovations and was finally finished in 1930 during the term of President Jorge Ubico. Together with the Hipódromo del Norte or northern hippodrome, it was the only horse racing venue in the city. This enormous, 1,600-metre track is still open to the public, although it is currently used for events of a more cultural nature, although it also has an equestrian centre.
The Obelisk of Guatemala
Greatly revered by all Guatemalans; a symbol of national freedom.
Twenty metres of glory.
Located at the junction between the Avenida de las Américas, the Boulevard Liberación, the Avenida de la Reforma and the Boulevard los Próceres, this impressive monument is nearly twenty metres tall and has a plaque that reads: "this plaque symbolises our supreme aspiration to freedom and justice. Revere it. Respect it. Never let it die". And, just next to the plaque, etched in bronze, are the words of the country's Act of Independence. This is the Obelisk of Guatemala, inaugurated on 19 July 1935 and an emblem ever since of Guatemala's fight for independence. It is an authentic nation icon. For this reason, many citizens come here to honour this symbol of the freedom of a people, of a nation. The large square is also used for many of the official public acts that take place throughout the year.

The Church of San Francisco, together with the San José Cathedral, is one of the buildings that make Antigua Guatemala one of the most visited cities in Central America. This building marks the beginning of the Calle de los Pasos, a street that represented the Via Dolorosa and which the faithful would take on important religious days to arrive at mass. Its most characteristic feature? Without a doubt, its fantastic facade that has withstood the passage of time like no other building. Inside, it is still home to the fourteen images that have adorned the church since it was built in the 16th century. When you visit, don't forget the adjoining museum which depicts key historical events in the evangelisation of America, one of the tipping points in the history of this continent.
San José Cathedral

The pride of Antigua Guatemala.
It's no coincidence that Antigua Guatemala, the former capital of the country, was known as "the most beautiful city in the Indies"; part of its excellent reputation stems from the magnificent buildings that line its streets. An example of which is the beautiful San José cathedral. This church was raised during the 16th century and had to be rebuilt after the 1773 earthquakes; however, despite this, its spectacular white facade still proudly extends from street to street alongside the Central Park. It is truly magnificent. Built in a markedly baroque style, it is home to images of great beauty such as el Señor Sepultado de San José or Nuestra Señora del Socorro, a Marian devotion which is very popular in Guatemala. The ruins of the original temple can still be seen and what remains of the original dome can be compared with the current one, which is still intact.
Guatemala City Temple
First sanctuary of the Mormon Church in Central America, inaugurated in 1984.
A great icon of the capital.
This rather generically named building is one of the most iconic monuments of Guatemala City, the first church built in Central America by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints or the Mormons, as they are more commonly known. It took two years to build and was completed at the end of 1984 and inaugurated by Gordon B. Hinckley, one of the most important presidents of this church. Its Guatemalan white marble is perhaps its most distinctive feature and the six supporting pinnacles are especially eye-catching; the tallest of which stands at 38 metres. It serves a community of over 190,000 people, not only from Guatemala but also from neighbouring countries. Thanks to its modern, innovative architecture, it is one of the great symbols of the capital.

Of huge relevance in Antigua.
This religious building was consecrated in 1736, the year it also began to be inhabited by nuns from the Order of the Capuchin Poor Clares. Today, it is one of the most visited monuments in the city of Antigua Guatemala. In the wake of the 1773 earthquake, all its goods were moved to the new capital and it wasn't until the mid-20th century that restoration work began to restore the building to its former glory. The courtyard is outstandingly beautiful, with a central fountain that lends a certain splendour to the building. It is built in such a way that stood in the centre of the complex, you can see the entire building by turning on the same spot. A curious fact? The Capuchins Convent is thought to be the first apartment building on the entire American continent, since its circular Torre del Retiro tower is home to a series of independent cells.
National Palace of Culture

Artistic epicentre of the capital.
As the former seat of the Guatemalan government, this building still has a grandiloquent and suggestive feel to it that hints at what you'll find inside. Its construction began in 1937 and finished in 1944, during the presidency of Jorge Ubico. With an archaeological style that combines neoclassical and baroque elements, its colonial features and the green hue of the stonework have earned it the nickname "Guacamolón". Today, it is a space dedicated heart and soul to the exhibition of art, mainly paintings and sculptures, which represents a good chunk of the history of the country. Interestingly, the building is also used as "kilometre zero" the for country's national road network.
Esquipulas Basilica
You better believe it: this is the largest Catholic church in Central America. Impressive!
Home to the adored Black Christ.
At around 200 kilometres (124 miles) west of the Guatemalan capital, the city of Esquipulas is home to one of those big features that makes a place really stand out: Its basilica is the largest Catholic church in Central America, a sign and symbol of the evangelisation that swept across the continent after the arrival of the Europeans. It is famous for its dazzling white facade and for its four bell towers, which are the only ones their kind in the region. This church pays tribute to the Black Christ of Esquipulas, which takes its name from the dark wood in which the statue is carved. The religious fervour it inspires is so great that thousands of people come every year to pray before the image, from different parts of the country and from neighbouring states. It was Pope John XXIII who, given its relevance, granted this church the ceremonial rights of a basilica.

It changed location, but its beauty and grandeur are still very impressive.
The most important church.
Guatemala City was not always the capital of this Central American country; this decision was made at the end of the 18th century, after the tragic earthquakes that devastated the country, when the official institutions and the cathedral were relocated. The move was completed on 15 March 1815, when the image of the Virgen del Socorro was installed in the cathedral in the new capital, a more than symbolic event for the congregation. Of a notably neoclassical style and after significant reconstruction in the wake of each earthquake, it is the most important religious building in the capital. It is located at the heart of the historical quarter. Interestingly, the gold from the altarpieces in the former cathedral was melted down to decorate the new ones, just like the bell from the main tower, which was made from the bronze from the San José Fortress.
San Felipe de Lara Castle
One of the most visited monuments in the country, living history of times gone by.
Small fortress overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
Located in the Izabal region, very close to the border with Honduras, the San Felipe de Lara Castle is a permanent reminder of the country's past. This small, military-style building dates back to the 17th century and was used as a defensive fortress, a prison (no small number of pirates of the Caribbean were imprisoned here over the years) and a busy customs post, being in a strategic position for trade between the continents. It also served to defend Spanish rule against other powers who were also interested in making a profit in the area. After various renovations which have kept the fortress in a good state of repair, it is currently one of the main tourist attractions in Guatemala, both for its historical importance and its prime location on the Caribbean Sea. Its Torre de Bustamante, a watchtower that guards impassively from on high, is its most characteristic feature.
