For many years the city has been home to two large markets, the Central and the Real, the latter located in the neighbourhood of the same name. To get a real sense of the life of the city, you really should get yourself in to see one of these markets - not just to watch locals doing their thing but to see how the four main local cultures have each made their mark on local gastronomy. So amid the passageways here you'll find stalls dedicated to the sale of typical Spanish cold cuts such as sausages and hams, others with North African spices such as sandalwood and frankincense. Then there are endless displays of fresh fish, baked goods, and top-notch produce. The Central Market was recently relocated next to Ramón y Cajal Plaza, and its previous quarters are being renovated to house a number of cultural institutions.
