Probably Melilla's oldest and best known's pastry shop takes its name from the great hill surrounding the city. Founded in 1917, Confitería Gurugú has been run ever since by three generations of the same family, and although much has changed since the early years, the elders of the family still recall the aromas given off by the recently baked goodies when they were transferred from the ovens to the store shelves. Specialties include biscuits similar to ladyfingers, as well as seasonal treats such as torrijas (a kind of French toast), egg-studded Easter cakes known as monas de pascua, and marzipan-filled huesos de santo ("saints' bones"). They also make turnovers and all manner of other traditional baked goods, as well as innovative pastries in various colours, flavours, and shapes. It's located on Called General Padeja.
