Tourist guide: what to do and see in Lanzarote
Lanzarote, the different Island
The third most populous of the Canary Islands is home to some spectacular nature, with more than 100 volcanoes creating imposing lunar-like landscapes both above ground and underwater. Its excellent year-round climate makes it possible to enjoy its beaches virtually any day, from Haría, with the island's whitest sand, to Famara, the ideal choice for surfing and other water sports. You'll love nature parks such as Timanfaya, a volcanic environment listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The local take on Canarian cuisine will tickle your taste buds, too, from the fresh local catch to classic Canarian "wrinkled potatoes". And its towns and cities offer some impressive history, culture and shopping - Exhibit A being capital Arrecife with historic defense fortresses San Gabriel and San José (the latter of which is home to the superb International Museum of Contemporary Art, established by a figure whose work you will see all over the island, artist/architect César Manrique).
