Every July 16, Melilla perks up when the city's fisherfolk honour their patroness - and share their joy with you!
Celebrating the patroness of fishermen.
As you would expect in a city with such venerable maritime and fishing traditions, the feast day of the Virgin del Carmen, patroness of fishermen, is a big deal in Melilla. The focus of the celebration is in a traditional neighbourhood of fishermen called Corea, whose denizens pour a lot of joy and passion into it indeed. If you come here on July 16 you'll find street parties featuring a giant paella and children's activities, as well as the traditional procession of the virgin from the racetrack to the Church of St. Augustine and then onward to the beach, where it is floated along shore for a bit on a boat. The big day ends up with an offering of flowers in the Plaza de los Pescadores (Fishermen's Square) in honour of those who lost their lives at sea in the line of duty.
