Bavarian king Ludwig I was a huge patron of the arts, and was responsible for a number of monuments and cultural institutions. One of them is the neoclassical Glyptothek, built in 1816 to display ancient Greek and Roman sculpture fromm 550 AD back to 650 BC (glypto means sculpture in Greek). Standouts include the Munich Kouros; a bust of the Greek poet Homer; and statues from the temple of Aphaia on the island of Aigina; the Medusa Ronanini; and the Barberini faun.
