Vega de Yuco Winery
Lanzarote wines, like its cheeses, are something special, and this winery is a top producer
Volcanic wine, anyone?
More than 2,000 hectares (eight square miles) of Lanzarote's volcanic earth is covered by vineyards, and its special properties yield extraordinary wines, including one that's unique in the world: volcanic Malvasia (malmsey). One of the very best is Vega de Yuco (est. 1997), in the village of Masdache near César Manrique's Monument to the Farmworker. It runs guided tours of the vineyard and winery by advance reservation, including tastings, and there's a shop where you can buy not only the house reds, rosés, whites, and Malvasias, but also liqueurs distilled from grapes, blackberries, herbs, and coffee.
