Monasterio de los Jerónimos (Jeronimos Monastery)
Essential visit to the masterpiece of Manueline gothic worldwide. Come and discover the glory and wealth of Portugal of yesteryear ...
Witness to the Portuguese empire.
There was a time when Lisbon was the centre of the world. Its explorers sailed the seas in search of a new world that made of Portugal an empire. This monastery, the Manueline Gothic masterpiece, it the only remaining witness of those days of glory and wealth. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, its construction began on 6 January 1501 to celebrate the return of Vasco de Gama from his historic round the world expedition. The church, featuring a single nave with fine and lengthy columns resembling skyscrapers, holds the remains of the sailor to whom you may pay tribute (the other tomb is that of famous writer Luis Camoes). Ornate with marine motifs, the elegance of this temple encompasses its cloisters, an architectural marvel that deserves quiet contemplation, not only for its aesthetic value but also for the peace conveyed by the place which saw the Heroes of the Old World set out to sea. Located in Parça do Império, you can plan your visit here www.mosteriojeronimos.pt.
