A city buried in ash
The ruins of León Viejo (Old León) were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, a distinction that confirms the importance of the site and its urban testimonial to Nicaragua's second-oldest city, and one of the most important in the region. The city was founded in the first third of the 16th century, near Lake Xolotlán and beside Momotombo Volcano, and was the home of merchants who traded precious metals; this transformed the city into an economic hub of the utmost importance. The facility is accessed by a tree-covered entranceway, which displays messages of Indigenous American descent; the same entrance leads to a space with colourful mural-covered walls, which represent elements of Nicaragua's history, culture, society and nature. The chief mural, painted in 1987, is entitled 'Nuevo Amanecer' ('New Dawn'), and represents the ideals of the new society that was created by the revolution. Upon entering the Tío Antonio school, you'll be surprised by the image of a blind boy weaving the cotton for a future hammock. This centre has contained an occupational workshop since 2008, which provides employment for people with disabilities. At present, no fewer than 30 young people work there, who manufacture and sell hammocks and other cloth items to earn a means of living and their own autonomy. In the workshop, the country's cotton is woven and natural dyes are employed, all throughout the manufacturing process, from preparing the skeins to quality control. The final product is exhibited at the same production site, so that customers can learn about the process used to create their future purchases. In addition to their day-to-day work, the works receive cultural and professional training and, in the case of the deaf and dumb, are also taught sign language._x000D_

The Chiltepe peninsula is a natural attraction that no visiting outdoor enthusiasts can afford to miss. Found about 10 kilometres from Managua, this peninsula is home to two lagoons, at Apoyeque and Xiloá. The Apoyeque lagoon was formed by the eruption of a volcano that bears the same name; it is estimated that this eruption occurred no less than two thousand years ago and, though some studies have labelled it as having among the highest likelihoods of eruption in the world, its activity is limited to occasional fumaroles and the smell of sulphur. Reaching the summit is not easy and requires a local guide, but the experience is one of a kind._x000D_

Inaugurated in a historic building in the city of Rivas in 1975, this museum has a main room dedicated to the exhibition of pre-Columbian ceramics, found in the sites that dot Nicaragua's coastal zones. Casa Salud Debayle was the first clinic in Central America, inaugurated by Dr. Luis H. Debayle, known as the Wise Debayle, who gave free medical consultations to neighbors without sufficient resources. Built in 1814, the colonial building was the headquarters of a bank before becoming a doctor's office and is now an extension of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua, where a large sample of pre-Columbian art is exhibited, especially handicrafts dating from the year 500 BC. . The building, in the historic center of León, suffered significant deterioration during the passage of Hurricane Mitch, which collapsed its second floor; the reconstruction was financed by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation, which invested around one million euros. The historical museum of San Jacinto is found at the outskirts of Managua and represents a central location in Nicaragua's contemporary history. Its activities aim to remember and pay tribute to the achievements of the national regulatory army of the mid-19th century, as they fought a group of armed invaders. This refers to an event dated to 1856: a Nicaraguan battalion, taking refuge in the Hacienda San Jacinto, caused a larger number of enemies, American filibusterers led by the mercenary William Walker, to flee. A spectacular location
The fortress of the Immaculate Conception was conceived as a point of control over Nicaragua's San Juan River, the waterway that connects Lake Nicaragua with the Caribbean. Known as El Castillo, it was constructed in 1675, before the English attacked and established themselves in the Caribbean, and functioned as a lookout point from which travel by merchants and pirates was monitored since the 17th century. It is located a little over 50 kilometres from San Carlos, the capital of the Río San Juan department, from where boats leading to this ancient fortress take off. Our Lady of Grace Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Central America, and the historic and cultural heart of León. Its eclectic style – a mix of Colonial Baroque and Neoclassicism – makes it a unique slice of history and religious architecture, and one of Nicaragua's most iconic monuments. Construction began in 1747, based on a design by Guatemalan architect Diego José de Porres y Esquivel. Burnt to the ground in 1856, its current appearance is the result of its reconstruction in 1945; it subsequently acquired the apse and dome raised on its presbytery in 1954. The beginning of the construction of the Iglesia de la Merced dates back to the 16th century, although extensions and structural renovations were carried out well into the 20th century. The church's main facade is an exceptional example of Colonial Baroque architecture in Nicaragua; the main altar features a golden altarpiece from the 19th century, which replaced a Baroque-style predecessor that was destroyed in a fire. The remains of Enmanuel Mongalo y Rubio, a national hero of the 1854 civil war, were interred in the church, before being moved to his native city, Rivas. A historic place to relax
The General Estrada Morales park, found in the famous Old Managua, is found next to Revolution Square and is a place for gatherings and recreation for the citizens of the capital. The park was the first built in the city; its design was drafted by Luis Lairac and was inaugurated by the president of the period, General José Santos Zelaya López, on the 8th of November, 1899. Due to the city's unusual layout and irregular growth, the thusly named Parque Central was, for many decades, the most popular recreational hangout for the capital's families, a place where they could enjoy kiosks, gazebos, kids' games and musical performances. "The Immaculate Conception Cathedral has been the seat of the Managuan Archdioceses since the earthquake of 1972, when the Old Cathedral became unusable for prayer and liturgical purposes. Between 1991 and 1993, the Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta Vilchis designed and carried out the construction of a church inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The result was a contemporary religious building, complete with restrained shapes and an eclectic style, which is reminiscent of Roman churches and mosques.
