Casa del General Fructuoso Rivera

Since '42.

This historical building is the main headquarters of Uruguay's National History Museum and the best place to discover the history of this country. Dating back to the early 19th century, the house was first home to the trader Cristóbal Salvañach and later to the first constitutional president, the general after which it is named today. It offers a range of permanent exhibitions that explore the ins and out of the nation's past, with representative artefacts from the period of independence and the first constitution. The museum is divided over two floors of the house, with a spiral staircase joining the two. The decor on the upper floor is spectacular; full of flat arches with architraves, balconies and the decorative parapet around the flat roof. The sword owned by José Artigas himself, Uruguay's national hero, is especially significant. The museum has been open since 1942.
