After football, horse-racing is the nation's other favourite sport. Pay a visit to the Maroñas racetrack to see what all the fuss is about.
Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets.
Although it isn't quite as popular as football, Montevideo is home to a fair few fans of the exhilarating sport of horse-racing. The Hipódromo de Maroñas is the country's leading horse-racing venue, located in the Ituzaingó neighbourhood. Dating back to 1889, it is still a firm favourite among entire families who flock here to catch the most prestigious races in the region and to marvel at the thoroughbreds as they charge around the 2,065-metre course. The classic event of the season is the Gran Premio José Pedro Ramírez, which has been running since 1889: it is currently held on 6 January each year along with other big races, making for the most important day on the horse-racing calendar. Another very prestigious race is the Gran Premio Nacional, which takes place during the first or the second week of November, depending on the calendar.
