MNAV: National Museum of Visual Arts

The number one.

At over a century old, the MNAV is commonly thought to be the most important in the entire country. Over its long history, it has made a huge contribution to the cultural development of Uruguay, promoting and creating awareness about visual arts and faithfully documenting the evolution of national and international art. Created in 1911, it quickly made a name for itself by putting on temporary exhibitions with retrospectives of national artists such as Joaquín Torres García, Rafael Barradas or Carlos González and work by international renowned artists such as Picasso, Klee, Miró, Chagall or Rodin. In the nineties, the Uruguayan landscape designer Leandro Silva created the museum's beautiful garden which today forms an integral part of the building. The museum also has a specialist library with over seven thousand books and a conference room.
