Even if you don’t wish to buy anything, it’s worth taking a look behind the scenes of this age-old trade.
Artisan Pottery
For that extra special souvenir, don’t miss out on this age-old tradition and pay a visit to Complexe des Potiers – Pottery Cooperative – en Oujla. With its roads of clayey soil and donkeys carefully transporting their soon-to-be-baked cargo, a magical world of earth-coloured handcrafts awaits you. More than 700 potters have made Oujla the capital of this artistic vocation, and many of them have partnered together, not only to make a living, but also to formally establish their tourist enclave and secure cooperation with the authorities. Such assistance is vital in terms of organising events to promote both the location and the artistry itself, as well as to guarantee better working conditions and a plentiful supply of the raw material in question. Yet one thing’s for sure: these artisans will be only too happy to sell you one of their creations, and show what pottery is really made of.
Rue Souika
A few bartering sessions later, and you’ve definitely fallen for some charming trinket or other.
Impossible to leave without buying something
One of the most popular, not to mention authentic, streets of the Medina of Rabat is Rue Souika, the epicentre of haggling and shopping for all tourists visiting the city. It’s a colourful souk where the aromas of the spices and leather blend with the bric-a-brac, babouches and a host of other traditional treasures available to buy. The good thing about this bazaar is that the sellers don’t follow you down the street hassling you to shop at their stalls, which makes for a considerably more relaxing perusal. You should always consider, however, making a lower offer than the original price given, and try not to show that you’re too interested in the merchandise. Sometimes, of course, it’s impossible to resist the charming curiosities you come across under those colourful canopies: you probably never thought about buying an oil lamp resembling the one Aladdin had, but guess what ends up in your suitcase!

The carpets of Rabat have a peculiar characteristic, for instead of embroidered narratives depicting epic tales – as is the case for other styles of Arab rugs – they tend to favour colourful geometric and floral patterns, traditionally known as “kubba”. The great rug souk is one of Rabat’s most popular shopping destinations due to its vast range of prices, styles and fabrics, all depending on where the craftwork actually originates. Look out for the carpets of neutral colours from the High Atlas Mountains, as well as the famed Berber craftsmanship which uses pure new wool to make typical nomad rugs. Yet not only will you come across carpets at this market, but also artisans selling material by the metre. You can pick up those classic wall tapestries, too, the kind which cover restaurants and restored riads. However, don’t forget the size and weight restrictions of your flight home. If you decide to buy any of this traditional handiwork, you might want to get some information about shipping companies first.

For an extra special treat
Shopping in the Medina can be utter madness if you don’t have a fixed budget in mind or a shopping list to hand. This is especially true of Souk es Sebbat, also known as the Jewellery Souk or Gold Souk, the place to go if you fancy treating yourself to a precious or semi-precious stone. Apparently, even Rabat’s engaged couples flock here to pick out their wedding gems, to be paid for by the future husband, of course, occasionally in instalments. The jewellery shops are basically small booths owned by filigree craftsman who work with much more than just gold and silver, but who will sometimes charge by the weight, regardless of the engraving work of the jewellery item in question. Despite their prices, they will always be cheaper than anywhere in Europe, but bear in mind that haggling is a national sport in Morocco, even in this souk.
National Jewellery Museum
With assistance from Spain, the creation of this museum is yet another demonstration of the passion for art.
A tour through the world of Moroccan jewellery-making
The historical relationship between Andalucía and Morocco bore fruit in 2006 with the collaborative inauguration of the National Jewellery Museum, a project which received a financial contribution of 150,000 euros from the Andalusian purse. The overall objective of this museum is to promote Moroccan craftsmanship and jewellery-making, from prehistoric to modern times. The permanent exhibition, in particular, owes much to the tradition of the expelled Moriscos who escaped from Andalucía and re-established their jewellery workshops in Rabat. Situated in the Kasbah of Oudayas, the National Jewellery Museum contains close to 300 pieces of exquisite beauty, and is a collection which clearly identifies the luxury preferences of specific historical eras: shells and bones feature in prehistoric ornaments; necklaces with glass beads were fashionable during Roman times; pendants, rings and gold coins denote the medieval period. The wealth of riches housed in this museum – look out for the items featuring precious stones – can tell us a great deal about the tastes and customs of Moroccan high society.
Currency Museum of Bank Al-Maghrib

A vast collection of mint memorabilia
The almost unknown Currency Museum of Bank Al-Maghrib was inaugurated by King Mohammed VI in June of 2002, with a collection containing more than 30,000 monetary pieces. Curiously, it has taken quite a while for this collection to come to light, the main funds of which date back to 1947. Inside, you will discover a high-technology macro-museum of over 2,000 square metres, its distinctly modern design attributing a futuristic aspect to the history of the Central Bank and its exclusive numismatic collection. A trip to this museum is an audio-visual experience to say the least, and is not complete without a look around the permanent exhibition dedicated to the world of economy, part of the treasured pictorial collection of Bank Al-Maghrib. If you visit the museum website you will also be able to find out about its cultural programme, a schedule of activities ranging from conferences about Moroccan artists and courses on numismatics, to the innovative children’s workshop entitled “how to design your own banknote”.

Contemporary art and cultural activities
Choosing to no longer dwell on past glories, Rabat at last decides to redeem its contemporary artworks and creators. The recently established Villa des Arts, sponsored by the cultural foundation, ONA, and associated with the Saatchi Gallery, aims to generate public interest in the various artistic disciplines which it currently promotes. With no expense spared, you’ll be amazed by the quality of the contiguous buildings exhibiting the contemporary works, not to mention the Al Borg sculpture, an impressive tower of concrete and glass built in homage to the solitary Hassan Tower. Other highlights of the Ville des Arts include the Diwan gallery, which holds both permanent and temporary art exhibitions, and the Forum, where seminars, intercultural exchanges, poetry recitals, concerts and even theatrical performances take place. Students and researchers are also given access to the media centre where they may peruse its vast collection of resources related to the art world, all of which are available online via the Virtual Museum.
National Museum of Postal Services and Telecommunications
Curious museum full of gadgets that will please both adults and children
Do you want to see the first fax in history?
Opened in the 1970s, the Postal Museum is the favorite place for philately lovers because it houses all the rarities in the form of stamps and objects related to telecommunications. Among its treasures is the first official stamp of Morocco, dating from 1912 and depicting a Tangier mosque. Objects related to the advancement of telecommunications in the country range from the telephone and telegraph to the picturesque belinograph, invented by Édouard Belin in 1913 and also known as telephotography. This invention could be considered the distant ancestor of the current Internet, since it was possible to send wired images through the telephone network. Another of the curious objects on display is the so-called Baudot, a type of telegraph with a printing system, which included a peculiar code invented in 1874 to interpret words through holes in the paper, which would undoubtedly be the predecessor of teletypes.

Enjoy the Kashba to the full
The old Museo des Oudaias recently changed its name to the Museum of Moroccan Arts, but in any case where you stay will know how to get there. It is located inside the Kasbah des Oudaias and is one of the ethnographic references of Rabat, with exhibitions that bring together history and beauty in equal parts from Prehistory to the Islamic era. On the one hand, you will find rooms with traditional Arabic music instruments, utensils to prepare the typical dishes of Moroccan cuisine, furniture from traditional houses and ornaments. Its collection of traditional costumes and tapestries is also impressive, so when you go out you will want to look for artisans who know how to make this centuries-old technique of elaborate rugs. One of the things you will learn in this museum is the difference between Berber tapestries -with oriental influences- and North African wool tapestries inspired by geometric figures.
Dar Belghazi Ethnographic Museum
Forget all the other museums you’ve visited, as none have been quite like this!
A museum full of curiosities
10 miles from Salé along the motorway towards Kentira is a museum of private origin, founded by artist, Mohamed Abdelillah Belghazi, where you will discover artefacts as beautiful as they are unexpected. Take, for example, the smallest Koran in the world, from the seventeenth century, which can only be read through the aid of a magnifying glass. As you peruse the various exhibits of this museum, you will learn how to identify which tribe a woman belonged to based solely on the jewellery she is wearing. Not to mention the room dedicated to one of Morocco’s flagship-products and star of its export industry: the kaftan. Particularly striking is a yellow piece threaded with gold from eighteenth century Tétouan. Other curious items housed here include the weaving and embroidery collected from across the centuries and regions of Morocco, historic manuscripts, and what are believed to be the very first Arabic instruments.
Mausoleum of Mohammed V
This impressive mausoleum is located on the esplanade of the Hassan Tower.
In honour of a much loved king
A truly mythical encounter, to enter the Mausoleum of Mohammed V is to walk through Morocco’s key historical moments. King Mohammed V was much loved by his people for rejecting the Nazi extermination ordered by the French Vichy regime, consequently saving some 400,000 Moroccan Jews. He stood up to Paris in the 1940s by defending the independence movements, was later forced into exile, and then returned in 1955 to proclaim Morocco’s independence. The esplanade where he prayed that day is now the site of his mausoleum, as requested by his son, the prince and succeeding king, Hassan II. Of a Hispanic-Moorish architectural style and artisan elaboration, the structure occupies 6,500 square metres. Inside, there lie three members of the royal family, watched over by eight lectors who take turns reading the Koran 24 hours a day. The tomb of Mohammed V is a sarcophagus of white onyx, a jewel of Islamic art, on dark-blue granite reminiscent of the sea.
Moulay Bousselham
A small coastal town with impressive landscapes, providing a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
A great option if you’re looking to get some rest
Upon arriving at the coastal town of Moulay Bousselham, via the road between Rabat and Tangier, you will be fascinated by its traditional fishing village appearance – colourful boats included – as well as its dune and forest landscape, whitewashed houses and beach front restaurants serving delicious fresh fish. One of its main attractions is the lagoon, Merja Zerga, a native bird watching reserve that was declared a Site of Biological and Ecological Interest, and which has more recently been upgraded to the category of National Park. Taking the opportunity to benefit from the situation, locals rent out their boats along with pairs of binoculars, allowing you to take a leisurely jaunt across the lagoon whilst observing the impressive spectacle of birds in their natural habitat. It’s best, however, to agree upon a price before stepping aboard (recommended price: 150 dirhams for a two hour trip for six people), leaving you to relax, enjoy the coastal scenery and identify the gulls, cormorants and flamingos, to name but a few of the species found here, to your heart’s content.
Mamora Forest
For a more fruitful day out, why not take a trip to this remarkably flourishing hillside?
A Green oasis
Morocco’s main source of cork oak, Mamora Forest near Rabat, boasts over 120,000 acres of terrain, making it one of the major green lungs of the region as well as chief supplier to the paper industry and a national hub of natural carbon production. To arrive at the forest, you must firstly make your way to the town of Sidi Yahya du Rharb, half an hour form Kentira, the port of access to this huge expanse of hills, pastures, eucalyptus trees and holm oak groves. Mamora literally means “fruitful”, just to give you an idea of the economic and environmental value of its natural resources. On occasion, however, this giant cork oak woodland has been threatened by both over-deforestation and plans to build a dumping ground on its outskirts. If you’re travelling to Rabat, it might be worth paying a visit before any changes take place.
Skhirat
An essential summer destination for Morocco’s high society!
Beach, sun and fun
If you continue further along past the town of Temara, but without straying from the coastline, you will come across the beach of Skhirat, a rather interesting spot to visit just 15 miles from Rabat. It is one of the few places where you will see European tourists in bikinis sharing the seashore with fully-clothed Moroccans. Due to its extraordinary weather and calm waters, this was the beach chosen as the location for the king’s summer palace, just to give you an idea of the standard of luxury, exquisiteness and, of course, security measures which you can expect to find here. Indeed, Morocco’s high society and business travellers alike all enjoy spending a few days relaxing at this coastal haven, and the hotels and restaurants are geared towards exactly that. A sight not to be missed is Skhirat’s beautiful lagoon, especially at night when the distant lights of the fishing boats seem to glow like fireflies on the water.
Mehdiya
Whether or not you like to surf, it’s worth paying a visit just to watch the surfers perform.
An especially charming beach
The Moroccan surfing capital of Mehdiya, just 30 minutes from Rabat, offers a startling taste of the unique eclecticism of the Kéntira region. Mehdiya beach is situated four miles from the centre (you’ll need a taxi to get there) and is definitely worth a visit if you’re a fan of surfing, its perfect sea conditions making it abuzz with surfboards and skilful acrobatics throughout the year. Another major attraction is the ancient and picturesque kasbah-fortress of Mehdiya, originally known as Mamora, perched high upon the headland with impressive views over the Sebou River estuary. Apparently, the story of Kentira Province dates back firstly to the Phoenicians, followed by the Romans, Almohads, and even includes a period of Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century, before finally being taken over by the Moroccans. Some of Mehdiya’s main highlights are its restaurants, terraces and nightspots.
Salé
If you have a few days to spare, then just cross the river and continue to be enamoured by this region.
More traditional but just as charming
The best way to begin your trip to Salé, Rabat’s twin city just across the river, is to take the picturesque tram which connects the centres of these two cities. Known as the “Corsair Capital” due to a tumultuous past, its original Roman name was “Sala Colonia”, and in the tenth century it was founded as the capital by a Berber tribe. Despite its close proximity to Rabat, Salé is more conservative and traditional, which means it is essential to observe standards of dress and behaviour so as not to offend local residents. Places of interest include the Islamic cemetery where, although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter, one may admire its stunning architecture from outside. Alternatively, if you fancy spending your day shopping for souvenirs, such as traditional raffia mats or rustic wool handiworks, the souks of Salé boast the most specialised and highest-quality textile craftsmanship in the region.
National Zoo
You’ll be amazed by both the variety of animals and the freedom in which they live.
An alternative daytrip idea for those travelling with children
The 67 acres of this zoo (with another 57 under construction), situated alongside the Prince Moulay Abdellah sports complex, will keep your family entertained for the day if you’re travelling with children. Inaugurated in early 2012, the zoo initially had difficulties recreating its natural habitats, and some of the animals – such as the hippopotamus and giraffe – died prematurely. Having overcome these problems, however, the zoo now seeks to maintain five African ecosystems: the desert, the savannah, the Atlas region, the wetlands and the subtropical zone. Amongst the animals which cause the most excitement for visitors are the Atlas lions, donated descendants from the royal Alaouite family collection. The zoo is designed in such a way that tourists may observe the animals with as few obstructions as possible. In particular, as opposed to using prison-like bars, the animals are separated by glass screens and moats, meaning they are free to roam in their natural habitat.
Exotic Gardens

An oasis in the middle of the desert
A visit to the Exotic Gardens, also known as the Gardens of Bouknadel, around 12 miles from Rabat, will take you to the city of Kentira. They were created relatively recently by French horticultural engineer, Marcel François, who in 1952 decided to gain some land from the sand and transform the desert into marshes and exact reproductions of exotic microclimates. The seeds had been collected during his travels around the world, from the Antilles to China, locations where the local flora had made such an impression on François that he tried to recreate it in this small corner of Morocco. What began as the personal oasis of this passionate gardener was eventually opened to the public in 2002, following a restoration project on behalf of the authorities, although some exotic species were unfortunately unrecoverable. A stroll through this maze of plants and suspension bridges, topped off with a cup of tea at one of the fountain-side rest areas, makes for an unparalleled experience so close to the desert.
Temara Beach
If you want to spend a couple of days on the beach, but in the company of historical monuments, then this is the perfect location.
A coastal town with everything you need for a great holiday
The town of Temara is for Rabat what Torrevieja is for Madrid, but with less beach-front snack bars and only nine miles away. That’s why you’ll find residents from the neighbouring capital enjoying everything that this seaside getaway has to offer: El Harhoura Beach stands out for its reefs and neighbouring forest; La Falaise is a small cove tucked away amidst the cliffs; the beach of Val D’or is renowned for its fine golden sands. The “Temara Coast” offers everything you might expect from a leisurely outdoor holiday, such as resorts, an equestrian centre, golf club and marina, as well as an endless list of sea-view restaurants. Yet Temara not only boasts a day of sea, surf and taking it easy. The town itself, founded in the twelfth century, holds a few secrets of its own, including a small-scale kasbah, mosque, and the ruins of the walled city that it once was.
Citadel of Chellah
At the mouth of the River Bou Regreg, these ruins of various civilisations will literally transport you back in time.
An ancient necropolis of multiple civilisations
A daytrip to the monumental necropolis of Roman origin, Chellah, will seem more like a journey back in time, albeit just over a mile from Rabat. But it wasn’t always a sacred burial site. During times of splendour at the mouth of the River Bou Regreg, it was firstly the Romans, followed by the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, who occupied the Citadel of Chellah, as have been discovered in the archaeological remains of the Roman Forum. If your visit happens to be in the spring, you will be able to enjoy an explosion of scent and colour at the Chellah Gardens. The half-buried Roman, medieval and Benimerine remains found in these gardens are the remnants of the fourteenth century grave site which became of the citadel ruins. Another key feature is the magnificent doorway decorated in Arabic calligraphy at the entrance to this novel dimension of Rabat, not to mention the quaint minaret hidden amongst the rocks and flowers.
The Medina
Different to that of other cities, it's quieter and right next to the sea.
Fewer mazes yet just as unique
The historic centre of Rabat, its Medina, preserves the essence of the traditions and street trades of the Moroccan people without the stressful tourist commotion that you might find in other cities like Fez or Marrakesh. In the souk of the Medina the street vendors do, of course, want you to buy from them rather than the neighbouring competition, but they will not follow you down the street haggling over the price. Much as they have done for centuries, the artisans continue to work in front of their stores, so you can literally see the products being made before your eyes. What’s more, it’s easy to find your way around this peaceful promenade, since the layout is not at all maze-like, and so a guide won’t be necessary. However, a piece of advice before delving into all its nooks and crannies: don’t let yourself be tempted by the fruit juices sold on the street stands. Albeit delicious, an unaccustomed stomach will inevitably end up with a few problems.
Dar Naji
Located in the Medina, this venue is popular with locals and tourists alike.
Great Moroccan food and atmosphere
You know when a restaurant is worth visiting when you can see local residents going there to dine with their families. And this is exactly what happens at the Dar Naji, a venue with spectacular views of the Medina and a decor that will make you think you’ve just walked into a Berber tent. Upon arrival, you will be offered orange blossom water for you to rinse your hands, and then again before you leave. The speciality here are the Maghrebi dishes, particularly the kefta tagine, chicken samosas and the timeless classic, tea, which they prepare slowly and pour from a particular height above the glass. The only problem is that, as the afternoon goes by, dishes start getting crossed off the menu, so not only is it wise to eat here but also to arrive early. The menu and atmosphere will not disappoint you.
Samaky
This menu is abundant with fresh fish, but also Moroccan dishes too.
Fresh fish with a live chef demonstration thrown in
They say that Samaky, another great example of speciality seafood cuisine, offers greater security and peace of mind to demanding customers, for they are able see the chef and his cooks prepare the dishes before their very eyes. In fact, it could be regarded as one of the attractive features of this distinctly nautical-style venue, with its nets separating the various sections, and fishing gear lining the walls, all of which bring in a daily catch of fresh seafood connoisseurs. The Samaky restaurant is divided into two sections: the inside with its cosy private area, and the terrace for those who prefer eating in the open air. What will surprise you most of all is the excellent value for money, the reason why it has managed to draw up such a portfolio of local regulars, despite being a relatively new establishment. Particularly appealing are its appetizers of typical Moroccan cuisine, the perfect accompaniment to your fresh from the sea, scrumptious fish dish.
Pâtisserie Lina
Custom-made cakes and sweet treats that will tempt you time after time!
The sweetest stop in town
For all those gluttons who can’t make it through another day without indulging in traditional Moroccan pastries with honey and dried fruit, the Pâtisserie Lina offers a thousand and one options to satisfy that sweet tooth of yours. If not for curiosity alone, it’s worth taking a look at the beautifully ornate wedding cakes, intricately decorated to quite possibly an international prize-winning standard. You could always put in an order for a smaller celebration cake, if your trip happens to coincide with an anniversary or birthday. But if you just want to try these sweet Moroccan creations, then take a deep breath and choose from amongst the immense variety of products displayed in the window. You may find, however, that one cake follows another, and then another, for it is equally that home-made artisan feeling of this cake shop which makes you want to stay and indulge in its taste sensations. The puff pastries with honey and pistachios are a must, as are the sweets topped in fine coconut flakes. If you’d like, they can even prepare a selection of treats to be specially packed up for your flight home.
Al Marsa
This seafood restaurant comes highly recommended, down to both the food and the views of the river.
Mediterranean food for you to enjoy
What was once a Japanese restaurant, the Al Marsa has now been converted into a Spanish seafood restaurant, and it must be said that it certainly ticks all the boxes: delicious recipes made from the best and freshest seafood, and hearty platefuls that offer customers amazing value for money. You might want to arrive with an empty stomach, so that nothing goes to waste. There is everything from classic fried calamari to Galician-style-octopus, prawns, swordfish, not to mention the grilled seafood platters, and all served with a good glass of wine. Located at the marina between Rabat and Salé, it’s well worth popping along and trying out its menu from the terrace overlooking the River Bou Regreg. Both locals and tourists alike are confident that this area is soon to become a hub of Mediterranean cuisine.
Le Ziryab
A touristy restaurant but one serving excellent food, and right at the centre of the Medina.
Don’t miss out on the sunset from the terrace!
At the heart of the Medina, very close to Rue des Consuls, is the almost secret restaurant of Le Ziryab, built in a restored riad that looks like a palace. Its unimpressive exterior, like most Moroccan architecture, hides an exquisitely decorated interior with half-moon arches, pillars reminiscent of the Great Mosque of Córdoba, and various different corners with distinct ambiences, so you’ll be sure to find the type of meal that suits you. It might be a business lunch in a private room, an intimate dinner for two, or a relaxing cup of tea on the sofas of the patio. Le Ziryab offers an authentic Moroccan experience, with waiters dressed in traditional clothing, live performances of local songs, delicious typical recipes and a roof terrace where can sit and watch the sun setting over the Medina. But don’t forget that this restaurant is firmly geared towards tourists, a factor somewhat reflected in the bill.
Gusti e Sapori
We couldn’t leave out an Italian restaurant that makes you feel like you’re in Rome itself!
O sole mio…
As is always the predicament of Italian cuisine, planning when to arrive at the Gusti e Sapori restaurant is easy, but planning when to leave is a different story entirely. This is because, first of all, choosing from amongst such exquisite Italian delicacies – people speak wonders of the squid ink spaghetti, not to mention the fresh tasting seafood – is going to take some time indeed. Secondly, the Italian wine list is quite possibly going to drive you mad. And thirdly, a whole host of sinfully sweet desserts are gathered together at this restaurant. You will, of course, find all those things that you’re probably missing by now, such as delicious pizzas and cold meat dishes. What’s more, the menu is so extensive and the portions so generous – they don’t even skimp on the enormous wedges of mozzarella that adorn the salad –, you’ll definitely be coming back for more. As for the waiters, although primarily local residents, the service they provide is abound with that warm spontaneous Italian charm. You will not be disappointed.
Ty Potes
Food to take away, a shop and a terrace full of plants – the choice is yours!

If you don’t fancy eating out in restaurants every day and would prefer to prepare something in your apartment, you mustn’t miss out on Ty Potes located near the cathedral. Surprisingly, this restaurant of Breton influence not only offers a select range of wines, draught beers, cheeses and pâtés, but also boasts a min-delicatessen where you will find all those foods that you wished you could buy in Rabat but weren’t sure where to look. Being the most traditional style of delicatessen, the shop-bar will sell you its cheeses, rye and whole-grain breads, wines and oils, as well as other of its high-quality products. Or, alternatively, you could just find a nice cosy little spot in the back garden, sit down and enjoy the dishes prepared at the restaurant, such as its famous sweet or savoury crêpes, though it might be a good idea to book beforehand. They may have overdone it slightly with the plants, mind you, as it does feel a little bit like eating in the jungle.

A cultural café in Rabat
A young environment of film buffs, intellectuals and hipsters. That is what you’ll find at the select Caféterie du 7ème Art, which is located right next to the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre. So why not enjoy an afternoon of cinema at the film library, attend one of its lectures or presentations, and then relax with a nice cup of coffee on the garden terrace? The Cinematographic Centre also organises film seasons in collaboration with the embassies of other countries in the city, making it a hub of cultural interaction. The types of conversation you might overhear amongst customers at the Caféterie du 7ème Art could be anything from an ardent critique of the latest Jordanian or Iranian film-maker, to a comparative discussion of the up-and-coming writers of Moroccan shorts. Despite being a bit of a clicky social gathering, it’s well worth dropping in for a visit, if not only to enjoy the gentle breeze that rustles through the bushes during late afternoon.

If you fancy a good knees-up, a bit of live music, some wooden barrels and – to go the whole hog – a nice grilled pork steak, then you must pop along to El Barrio Latino, the food and party hotspot of the city. As the very name suggests, it’s a kind of independent republic at the heart of Rabat, with a great wine and beer list to accompany the hearty dishes and Spanish tapas. Situated near the train station, it becomes the height of madness on Tuesdays and Saturdays when the famed “karaoke nights” take place. But you have to arrive early and be a little patient, because the low prices, live music and party atmosphere are real crowd pullers, and pretty soon its four walls are bursting at the seams. You should definitely book ahead for the show on Friday night, when it’s packed to the rafters until at least two in the morning.

Located in the Hotel du Pietri and famed as Rabat’s epicentre of jazz and great live music, Le Bistrot du Pietri is a gastronomic and cultural highlight that you cannot afford to miss. Each month in the lounge, a gathering is held known as “the friends of the literary café”, where a popular writer will come and give a presentation. Yet the elegance of this hotel is but the prelude to the fine fusion dining experience that waits you in its restaurant: with European and Asian influences as well as a new take on Maghrebi dishes, the generous portions are always accompanied by an international wine list. Yet as well as the exclusive atmosphere, Le Bistrot du Pietri is also a popular spot for nightlife, with live-band music events on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays bringing you the very best of the latest jazz sounds in what is known as “Les Sessions du Pietri”.

The most “in” place to be in Rabat
If you want to check out where Rabat’s high society go for lunch and unwind after work, make your way to La Véranda, with access via the French Institute which looks more like the entrance to an administrative complex. As you can imagine, the exclusivity of this place will completely take you out of the norm, away from the hubbub of the city and traditional Morocco, placing you in an elegant modernist-style venue with a spectacular landscaped terrace under a canopy of palm trees, which at night creates the most intimate and romantic ambience. Surprisingly, the French cheese board has also arrived at La Véranda. Its cuisine is described as “French-Mediterranean”, with influences and fusions of all kinds. Standing out on the menu are the deliciously prepared fresh fish dishes such as the trout in almond, as well as a list of exquisite desserts, to be enjoyed at any time of day – even with a mid-afternoon coffee – and even includes the likes of crème brûlée.

If you’re looking for somewhere to have a few drinks, you have four places to choose from.
If you are looking for nightlife or pubs in Rabat, it’s not that it’s impossible, but it’s certainly not going to be easy. The sale of alcohol is highly restricted and women travelling alone should not go out to a venue unaccompanied, though there aren’t that many places to choose from anyway. However, because of this, there are now more and more Europeanised hotels which have some sort of nightclub selling cocktails next to their restaurant, with music ranging from jazz to Arabic-techno. Amongst these, your best options are the Ambar Bar at the Sofitel Rabat Jardin des Roses, Bar XO in Le Diwan Rabat and the pub-lounge with terrace at the Hotel Balima Nightclub. But the one that will definitely leave you out of breath, and credit on your card, is the luxurious La Tour Hassan located in the hotel of the same name, boasting a variety of environments, gardens and good music, not to mention the comfy seats where you can chill out and enjoy the very best cocktails.

Fine French dining at the heart of Rabat
If you’ve been in Rabat for a while, and your stomach is getting tired of tagine and couscous, it’s time to take a gastronomic break at a good French restaurant. As if you had jumped on a quick flight to Paris, the Cosmopolitan combines an exquisite Art Deco interior with an equally impressive menu, so that as soon as you walk out the door you’re already thinking about coming back. The menu changes according to the time of year and the seasonal produce, and so goes beyond the usual high expectations of French haut cuisine. The restaurant features a terrace-garden, the perfect setting for a romantic dinner, as well as a chimney for the winter months. Specialities at the Cosmopolitan range from French fusion-cuisine to hints of Italian, and, of course, a Europeanised version of Moroccan dishes for delicate stomachs.
Yamal Acham
Traditional dishes, but not like anything you might have tasted before.
A different take on Moroccan cuisine
For the foodies among us, as well as the non-experts, the Yamal Acham restaurant proves that not all Arabic food is the same. Neither is it restricted to the traditional Moroccan dishes that you probably would’ve already tried everywhere else in Rabat. The Yamal Acham transports you to Syria in the Middle East, where similar ingredients are used but in a completely different way. It is a beautifully decorated venue with delicately embossed seats and a lounge area fitted with cushioned sofas, ideal for drinking tea. Their dishes include the classic humus, kebabs, warak enab (a Syrian recipe of grape leaves filled with meat and rice) and a whole range of delicious desserts, especially those made with pistachios and honey. One of the most appealing quirks of Yamal Acham, however, is the tea or coffee option (Turkish for brave bellies and espresso if all you want is to savour that great coffee taste).
Le Petit Beur (Dar Tajine)
Here’s one of the few places where you can enjoy your meal with a good glass of wine.
A cosy venue for a soirée with a difference
It would be a good idea to make a reservation or arrive before rush hour, because the small venue of Le Petit Beur, also known as Dar Tajine, fills up at both lunch time and dinner. Its success lies in its traditional cuisine, which comes complete with a musician who softly plays a melancholic lute whilst you dine, though the small confines of this restaurant offer little opportunity for privacy. At the Dar Tajine, the delicious and hearty Moroccan dishes can be enjoyed with a good wine or beer, a rare thing in other restaurants of Rabat. The specialities include the “pastilla poulet”, tagine and couscous, but don’t lose sight of the tasty dessert menu. Another plus point of the small cosy Dar Tajine is its close proximity to Hotel Balima, making it the perfect opportunity for a soiree of dinner and drinks.

Located in the Medina, there is nothing average about this restaurant.
If you’re looking for authentic Moroccan cuisine, then this is the place for you!
It’s difficult to resist the temptation of asking the waiter if you can take with you the exquisite crockery on which the food is served at the Dinarjat restaurant, one of the most traditional spots of the Medina. But even more difficult is actually finding this remote little corner amidst the labyrinth of streets, so if approached by a guide offering to show you the way, it might not be a bad idea to accept. Yet although hard to find, the eventual experience of authentic Rabat culture makes it all worthwhile. The restaurant stands out for of its attention to detail, especially the live musician who will accompany your meal and play traditional Moroccan songs as you sample the delicious typical dishes especially prepared from age-old recipes. Amongst its peculiarities – apart from the bathroom in electric pink – are the tea rituals and the gift of orange flower petals, making for a truly unforgettable dining experience.

If you’re passionate about surfing then you’re definitely in luck. The Atlantic brings some of the best waves to the beaches of Rabat, a detail which has not escaped the attention of the Moroccan king, Mohammed VI. Apparently, not only does he practice the sport as often as he can, but is actually the founding member of the Oudayas Surf Club. Whether you already know how to surf and just want to rent a board, or you fancy taking some lessons, you will find everything you need at this surf and body-board school on Rabat beach. The local surfers love competing against the tourists (and winning), so if you go near anyone with a board you will find they are only too happy to advise you on the best and worst surf-spots, the dangerous tides and what you ought to know about the sea conditions. To get your strength back after a day of waves and wipe-outs, take a seat at the surf club coffee shop and relax on its terrace.

At just nine miles from Rabat is the ultimate golf lover’s paradise, the Royal Dar Es Salam Golf Club, an apparent miracle of nature and irrigation in a land adjacent to the dessert. The club is situated amidst a cork oak forest with over 1,080 acres of terrain, designed in the unmistakeable style of the celebrated “golf course architect”, Robert Trent Jones. According to the experts, it is one of the most difficult courses in Europe (and beyond) due to the cork oak trees surrounding its fairways, which indeed require a certain degree of technique. Music, colour and celebration in Rabat
Two weeks of festivities, concerts and national and international music take place each year at the International Festival of Rabat, also known as the Mawazine World Rhythms Festival, which in 2013 celebrates is twelfth anniversary. Artists of the likes of David Guetta, Deep Purple, Rihanna, Enrique Iglesias and jazz musician George Benson are just a few examples of the event’s prestigious line-up, not to mention the great Moroccan artists who likewise share the stage. As well as being celebrated in specific concert venues, the festival also consists of theatre shows and performances on the streets of downtown Rabat and Salé, everything form hip hop to African Brazilian percussion, giant puppets, parades and Balkan gypsy music. Germany in Rabat? That’s right!
The German cultural embassy in Rabat, the Goethe Institute, has so many free-time activities available, that it’s almost an independent arts centre in itself. The only difference is that it contemplates art, literature, theatre and other disciplines from a German perspective. If you intend on having a long stay in Rabat and you’re a fan of languages, you can enquire about the German courses on offer. Equally, if you’re interested in German cinema, its film library hosts a cycle of film seasons that won’t disappoint. Amongst its latest projects is “La3bodaba”, which the institute describes as “serious fun” and consists of developing theatre programmes and workshops of stage experimentation in conjunction with local company, Dabateatr, as well as taking part in exchanges with other international companies. The Goethe Institute also boasts a café with a distinctly European atmosphere, serving pizzas, salads, wines and beers at ridiculously low prices. But don’t expect a refined menu with imported beer, for it’s aimed at the student public.

Avant-garde Moroccan art
If you’re curious about which trends are up and coming in the Moroccan art world, you cannot afford to miss the Nouiga Gallery situated in the old quarter of the city, a bubble of avant-garde innovation poised amidst tradition. Its inaugurations are considered social events, with the city’s intellectuals often being seen in the gallery, more to look around than purchase anything, but always intrigued by the art itself. The gallery organises permanent and temporary exhibitions of photography and painting, as well as other disciplines of plastic arts, with particular emphasis on the country’s young emerging artists. The works they exhibit do not seek traditional forms, but rather transgression and vindication, often through a message of political or social significance. You will also be amazed by the exhibition of international works as part of the “guest artist” programme. With these words Mohammed Benhsain, director of the Mohammed V National Theatre of Rabat, defines the philosophy of his institution, one which is undoubtedly fulfilled: the very best in opera, dance, drama, ballet and concerts of all kinds step onto the stage of this theatre, which has become the cultural centre and artistic oasis of the city. Due to its close proximity and historical ties, the theatre maintains an excellent relationship with Spanish artists, often staging performances as part of events such as the “Festival of the Two Shores”. Why not check the programme during your stay in Rabat to see if any of the shows captures your attention? What’s more, in a bid to become a multidisciplinary centre, the venue has also provided the setting for numerous photography and painting exhibitions.
Dâr-al-Mahkzen – Royal Palace

The complex Royal Palace
The Royal Palace, or Dâr-al-Mahkzen, does not actually serve as a family residence of the Alaouite monarchy, but is instead employed as the seat of government, as well as other institutions, since Rabat has now become the political and institutional centre of the country. The security measures around the grounds are, therefore, quite overwhelming. The palace is not open to the public, though it is possible to take a stroll – at a distance and without photographing the military personnel – through the nearby gardens, from where you may observe its impressive architecture. The plaza in front of the palace, known as Mechouar, is where the commemorative ceremonies usually take place in honour of the Moroccan king. The Royal Palace was erected in 1864 on the ruins of the old palace and, in principle, should be used by the king to welcome diplomatic representatives and address political issues. Yet just as he is in the practice of changing residence, so too is it customary to receive delegates in other cities.
Kasbah of Oudayas

The most Mediterranean of kasbahs
Today, any citizen of Andalucía, Valencia or Extremadura would most probably be able to trace their roots and ancestors back to the Kasbah (Fortress) of Oudayas, where the Moriscos expelled from Spain took refuge in around 1610. During this period, Rabat opened its gates to their craftsmen, potters, bookbinders and merchants, who at the same time influenced the Andalusian style of the city and its white washed houses. Yet not only was it a refuge for Spanish Moriscos, but also the freebooters who plundered the Mediterranean under the protection of Rabat’s ruler, subsequently converting the city into a kind of autonomous republic of pirates and exiles. The corsair adventure of Rabat came to an end, however, in 1666 when the Alaouites took control. As you explore the narrow streets of this kasbah, full of nooks and crannies, between the blue and white houses with shadows and passageways leading to courtyards with gardens, you can’t help but think you’re wandering around the streets of southern Spain.
Almohad Walls
If you want to see an example of Rabat’s history and strength, then fix your eyes on this magnificent wall.
Eight centuries defending the city
When the city of Rabat was founded, slave trading and intertribal attacks were the order of the day, so a fortified structure was designed that would protect the interior of the stronghold. The Almohad Walls, built in the twelfth century alongside the River Bou Regreg, stand testament to an era of battle, with its walls literally charged with history. During that twelfth century, the successful Almohad campaigns along the Peninsula – which were launched from this very fortress – earned it the name “Ribat al-Fath” or “Stronghold of Victory”. The enclosing wall still retains its five city gates, most notably Bab el Alou, and boasts impressive views of the coast. The city was practically abandoned following the death of the sultan, Yacoub al Monsour, and then burned to the ground in 1260 by the king of Spain, Alfonso X the Wise, in what was his greatest victory over a site of ruins.
Sanctuary of Sidi Abdallah Ben Hassoun

The patron of Salé
Also situated on the other side of the River Bou Regreg is the Sanctuary or Marabout of Sidi Abdallah Ben Hassoun, the patron of Salé. It is a funerary complex – which in recent years has been extended in order to expand the walls of the local cemetery – where the remains of this orator and saint have lay at rest within surroundings of delicate architecture since the nineteenth century. The most novel aspect of this sanctuary is the Wax Lantern Festival or “Mawkib Esh Shomouaa”, which is celebrated each year on the eve of Mouloud (the birth date of the Prophet Mohammed) and dates back to the time of pirate occupation in Salé, when it was customary to go to the sanctuary and ask that the patron grant seamen a safe return. The tradition consists of carrying large enkindled lanterns on a night procession to the cemetery, a site where only Muslims may enter. A spectacle of light that is well worth seeing!

More beauty just across the river
Albeit the twin fortress of Rabat on the other side of the river, Salé deserves a chapter of its own. Amongst its many monuments you cannot afford to miss the Merini Madrasa which, since the fourteenth century, has remained preserved as if time had never brushed against its walls. The madrasas are centres of Islamic study, educating young Muslims in grammar, history, Islamic law and the art of Arabic calligraphy. The Madrasa of Salé, in particular, is renowned for its extraordinary ornamental beauty, reminiscent of the Moroccan-Andalusian style, whereby sculpted plaster and carved wood are interspersed with a colourful zellige mosaic. Traditional Kufic inscription adorns the entire building with Koranic verse, a stark contrast to the bare-walled cells that would house the students during their period of schooling. The madrasa itself is built around a patio, where the trickling water from the central fountain was used in the performing of ablution prior to entering the prayer hall, the ceiling of which is a marvel of cedar wood craftsmanship.
Bab Oudaia
Before entering the labyrinthine Kasbah, be sure to take note of the intricate features of this gate.
A gateway to history
The Almohad gate of Bab Oudaia, built in the twelfth century, is the entrance to one of the historic corners of Rabat, the Kasbah of Oudayas, a fortification strategically positioned high in the mountains so as to provide defence against attacks from enemy tribes. Bab Oudaia was placed far from the palace of the sultan, Yacoub al Mansour, and so it is believed that the construction was intended more for ceremony rather than defence. Through this gate of ochre and reddish hues, adorned with geometric arches and Kufic inscriptions, would pass slave traders, pirates and buccaneers, merchants and expelled Moriscos from Andalucía, all of whom contributed to the wealth of the city. The kasbah prominently overlooks the sea and the River Bou Regreg. Although originally for defensive purposes, crossing the gateway these days will only plunge you into a peaceful residential area, ideal for exploring and soaking up its breath-taking views.
Hassan Tower
Despite never becoming the largest mosque in the world, it is undoubtedly one of Rabat’s must-see locations.
The sister tower of the Giralda
This monument tells the story of an unfinished construction due to the death of its founder. What might have been a spectacular twelfth century Almohad mosque ultimately materialised in no more than the Hassan Tower and 200 abandoned mini-pillars designed to support the foundations. Sultan Yacoub al Mansour had planned to build the largest mosque in the world – after the Samarra in Iraq –, but he died too soon and nobody continued the project. The Hassan Tower – very similar to the minaret we call the Giralda of Seville – should have measured over 60 metres high, yet only ever reached 44 metres. At least, however, the esplanade of the tower hosts another nearby monument which was indeed completed: the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Built between 1961 and 1970, here lie the remains of the very sultan who gives name to the mausoleum along with his two sons. This structure occupies 1,500 square metres and is of an Arabic-Andalusian architectural style with Moroccan influences.

You’ll instantly be able to tell when you’ve arrived at Rabat Municipal Market on Avenue Hassan II. A vital hub for the buying and selling of fruit and vegetables, all stacked up in crates in the open air, you cannot fail to miss those distinctive aromas, often intensified by the heat. Indeed, it is certainly the place to go to buy fresh fruit picked that morning – it’s recommended you stick to fruit that you can peal or, alternatively, you should wash it with bottled water to avoid any stomach problems – and get rid of those hunger pains before taking a wander around the city. The market also sells (by weight) the unique and exclusive spices of Moroccan cuisine, which could make for a great exotic gift idea, perhaps, or even a token of your time in Rabat. Before purchasing any local flowers or seeds, however, make sure that you are aware of the latest travel regulations, for they may prohibit the transport of seeds coming into Europe, or require that you declare them, in order to avoid the planting of potentially invasive foreign species.

For all those passionate about literature and rare books, the Kalila Wa-Dimna Bookshop is an essential port of call while staying in Rabat. Curiously enough, the bookshop gets its name from a mythical Arabic fable from the eighteenth century – itself inspired by Hindu texts from the third century – which King Alfonso X, “the Wise”, ordered to be translated in the eighteenth century, and such is how this moral tale reached the shores of Spain. Indeed, the bookshop in Rabat very much retains these pedagogical roots, stocking texts not only of traditional Moroccan literature, but equally the very best of contemporary authors and international bestsellers, both Arabic and French alike. Another of its strong points is the independent literature that you simply won’t find at other bookshops, not to mention the section dedicated to science and technology. The opening hours are Monday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Rue des Consuls
You’ll find everything you’re looking for on this street, but be prepared for a bit of haggling.
Barter a bargain with the best!
Rue des Consuls originally owes its name to the fact that it once harboured the majority of the foreign embassies in Rabat, acting as a sort of diplomatic central up until 1912. Its initial task was seemingly to negotiate with the Corsair Republic of Salé and free the European prisoners who had fallen into the hands of pirates. Nowadays, however, the only remnant from that era of hard-bargaining is the haggling over prices for which this avenue is now famous. In fact, it is one of the city’s prime shopping districts. So where there were once donkeys carrying saddlebags laden with craft products from the villages, now vans arrive loaded with merchandise, though they still bring with them the occasional elderly merchant intent upon attracting some trade. What’s more, the charm of Rue des Consuls equally extends to the neighbouring streets, where you will find the master craftsmen organised according to their specialist field: leather, metal, ceramics, silver… An absolutely essential shopping trip during your stay in Rabat!
Bab el Had
Surrounded by markets and street stalls, this is a great place to get a true feel for the city.
The gateway to a more traditional Rabat
The route which runs through Bab el Had – literally “the Sunday Gateway” – in Rabat will give you an opportunity to truly experience what the city must have been like with its camels, travelling merchants, spicy smells and joints of lamb. On Sundays, this very same atmosphere is recreated at the market pitched at the foot of the gate, where you can haggle yourself a bargain with the local vendors. If you take a wander around the nearby vicinity you will also be able to witness the last of Rabat’s scribes who, equipped with their old typewriters, will draft documents as and when commissioned. After passing through the gate you find yourself immersed in the crowd that throngs the busy Rue Souika, which leads firstly to the Grand Mosque and then onto the Souk es Sebbat. If footwear is on your list of souvenirs, what better than a pair of babouches hand-made before your very eyes, not to mention the vast array of other fine leatherworks on offer? The gate of Bab el Had will literally transport you to the picturesque world of these local crafts.
