Start the day with a visit to Madrid's Royal Palace1, one of the most emblematic places in the city. Next, head to the viewpoint between the Palace and the Almudena Cathedral2 for a panoramic view of the surroundings.
Then turn back and take a stroll through Plaza de Oriente to the Teatro Real3, one of the most important opera houses in the world. Carry on to Plaza Mayor4 then head up Calle de Postas to Puerta del Sol5, kilometre 0 of Spain's national roads. Since you're passing, pop into Galerías Canalejas6 to see more than 17,000 historical objects that have been restored with traditional techniques, some of them almost extinct. Afternoon

Morning
Start the day exploring the historic centre of Madrid from Puerta del Sol1, the city's central square and kilometre 0 of Spain's national roads. You'll also find the famous clock that strikes midnight on New Year's Eve.
From there, head to Plaza Mayor2, a beautiful square surrounded by historical buildings, and then explore the Barrio de las Letras or "literary quarter", once home to famous writers and nowadays a bustling area filled with cafes, restaurants, boutiques and bookshops.
