The generally sweet Ticos naturally have a sweet tooth
The sweet nature of the Ticos is reflected in their cuisine, which abounds with pastries, puddings, and baked goods. Some top examples include bread pudding, baked plantains, coconut flan, mazamorra (cornstarch pudding), and torta chilena (layer cake filled with caramel). You can find much of this sinful stuff at cafés and bakeries all over San José. A top choice is La Española, on Avenida 2 just down from the Melico Salazar Theatre, where you'll find specialities like trenzas de canela (cinnamon braids) and pan de amor ("love bread") to enjoy amid an expansive salon full of vintage photos — a great place for breakfast or a snack. There's also a popular bakery chain called Trigo Miel (www.trigomiel), famous for its colourful - even spectacular - tarts and cakes.
