Temple of Music

A San José icon, architecturally, culturally, and politically

Built in 1920 in neoclassical style, the most important building in downtown's Morazán Park is one of the most recognisable architectural symbols of Costa Rica's capital. The Templo de la Música is an open-air pavillion designed by architect José Francisco "Chisco" Salazar, who was, it is said, inspired by France's Versailles Palace. In its first decade, the Templo hosted local high society's New Year's Eve bashes and musical shows until they were moved to Plaza González Víquez. In addition to staging an extraordinary number of performances over the course of nearly a century, the building has played a quite prominent role in the public life of this country, as many prominent politicians have utilised it for political events.
