When it's time to eat, all roads lead to this bustling market, the city's gastronomic centre par excellence. And yes, if you can smell smoke then the barbeque is fired up and ready to go. The Mercado del Puerto is home to a wide range of artisan stalls, but the start product here is certainly the food so take your time to savour all the authentic Charrúa dishes on offer: achuras, offal, roast meats, stuffed rolled joints, chotos, chinchulines and so much more to make your mouth water. Two bars that stand out from the crowd? Firstly, El Palenque, which is known for its sublime combination of creole barbequed meats and Spanish and Mediterranean flavours; and secondly Roldós, inventor of the Medio y Medio (a mix of dry white wine and sparkling wine) and home to an enormous barbeque in full view of all customers.
