This museum showcases the skill and talent of the great Torres García.
Allow us to introduce one of the greatest icons of Uruguayan culture, a creative genius who from the late-19th to the mid-20th century structured his work around the principals of tradition, constructivism and universality. Despite the clear influence of his extensive travels to avant-garde cities like Barcelona, Paris or New York, Joaquín Torres García's paintings remained true to a single fundamental concept: constructive universalism. As an artist, he had an unrivalled understanding of how to combine the two cultures which he made his own: the archaic Mediterranean and the pre-Colombian. The museum, located in a stunning art deco building in the old town, offers the chance to explore the life and works of the pioneer of modern art in South America, which he promoted through his movement 'La Escuela del Sur' or the school of the South. This space is both a museum and a cultural centre, combining paintings and personal belongings of the artist with educational activities and art workshops.
