Torre de Belem (Belem Tower)
Exuding magic and fantasy, it would be the perfect setting for film such as "The Princess bride".
The enchanted watchtower
For many, Lisbon is not just a city but also and specially a magical place. Now, they may have a point if we reckon this is precisely the city's most iconic landmark. Because this mini fortress, rather than a relic of its glorious past as the cradle of conquerors and explorers, resembles an enchanted tower as those featured in films such as The Princess Bride or Pirates of the Caribbean. Unfortunately, neither mythical nor paradise waters bathe the Belem Tower but the cold Atlantic instead. Erected during the prosperous reign of Manuel I, it is one of Gothic Manueline masterpieces, an era in which the discovery of America fuelled fantasies of architects, hence its decoration features sailboat lines and other marine elements. Check it out: there's even a rhinoceros! Needless to say, you can go inside and discover the old jail and the cannons that defended it. All information about the monument and visiting schedules is available at http://www.torrebelem.pt/.
