Collegiate Church of Santa María del Campo and Church of Santiago

Two exquisite examples of the Galician Romanesque.

In the highest part of the Old Town you'll find one of the city's best examples of the Romanesque, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria del Campo, built during the 12th and 13th centuries (though its facade was modified in 1880). Its floor plan has three naves sans transept (where there are mediaeval tombs), with a bell tower, a 14th-century rose window, and a capitel from the 15th century. There's also a Museum of Sacred Art inside. Another of the remarkable religious buildings in A Coruña worth seeing, also located in the Old Town, is the 12th-century Church of Santiago, the city's oldest extant Christian house of worship and one of the most representative buildings of the Galician Romanesque. These buildings have traditionally been key spots on the "English Route" of the Way of St. James pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela (so named because British and Irish pilgrims would arrive here by ship to begin their trek; details at http://camino.xacobeo.es/en/routes/english-way).
