Tavernas in Plaka

Enchanting tavernas in a charming neighbourhood

The Plaka neighbourhood of flower-lined streets spreads out from under the Acropolis and is flanked by the Ancient and the Roman Agora. This historic quarter of the city extends from Syntagma Square at one end to Monastiraki Square at the other. Nestled between these two Squares, you'll find a whole host of colourful houses, narrow paved streets and a whole lot of flowers. It is also known as the taverna neighbourhood and is said to be the birthplace of these traditional Greek bars. There are dozens of tavernas to visit but we recommend Taverna Platanos, at 4 Diogenous Street, which is one of the oldest and most popular in the area. All the best traditional Greek dishes are served here. It is the perfect place for a mid-morning snack of Greek mezze (typical aperitif) washed down by a glass of ouzo (traditional liquor).
