De la Guerra House

How the mighty once lived in Lanzarote

The town of San Bartolomé is worth visiting in part because it's home to this 19th-century upper-class manse. The Casa de la Guerra was built by local military commander Francisco Guerra Clavijo y Perdomo, on a hilltop overlooking the port of Arrecife as well as Mina and Guaticea mountains. It's a typical traditional Canarian affair of whitewashed adobe, with a red-tile roof, central courtyard, outdoor breezeway, basement with a cistern, and various period-furnished rooms open to visitors and also containing panels describing the history of the town. Open Tuesday through Sunday 10 am to 5 pm.
