El Grifo Vineyard

The Canary Islands' oldest vineyard

Outside the town of San Bartolomé, award-winning Viñedos El Grifo is the Canary Islands' oldest vineyard, dating back to 1775. Its speciality is the Malvasia grape (traditionally known in English as Malmsey), which mostly produces sweet wines and is protected with its own denomination of origin. Visitors can tour its more than 60 hectares (148 acres) of vineyards, culminating in a stop in the whitewashed wine cellar for a tasting, accompanied by local cheeses, breads, and olives. There's also a wine museum, housed in the old wine cellar built from lava rock, with displays of vintage fermentation equipment as well as extensive documentation of the industry's history. Vineyard tours must be reserved; open Monday through Friday 11 am to 3 pm and weekends 11:30 am to 3 pm.
