Casa museo Amalia Rodrigues (Amalia Rodrigues House Museum)

The queen of fado

One cannot visit Lisbon and leave without paying tribute to the queen of fado, Amalia Rodrigues (1920-1999). This legendary fado artist, who emerged from a humble home in the Baixa district and marvelled audiences in New York, Tokyo, Buenos Aires and Moscow, rubbing shoulders with the stars of her time as Imperio Argentina, is without doubt one of the most emblematic figures of Portugal. In 2001, therefore, her house became a museum to honour the woman who gave international visibility to the heart-breaking Portuguese music, with recordings such as the legendary Novo Fado da Several or Ai Mouraria. Located close to the Portuguese Assembly, Rua de Sao Bento, 123, the house showcases her portraits, some of the dresses she wore in famous performances (her colour was black) and you can listen to some of her best-known recordings. After the visit, it is best to approach one of the traditional fado houses of the Alfama district, where you can further delve into the legacy and repertoire the voice left in Portugal.
